The reason why my gpa is so low is that during my high school years (all except junior) I was dealing with some major family issues, in which my own and my families lives were put in risk on a daily basis and my home environment was horrible.

Schools: Washington University in St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, Emory, George Washington, Case Western.

Anything will be great thank you!

Wash U in St. Louis: Reach
JHU: Reach
Emory: Reach
GWU: Reach
Case Western: High match

What’s your safety?

You really don’t… A higher rank is really preferred at these levels of universities. Think, there are 40% of people at your school who are more qualified in grades.

My safeties are Oklahoma City University, University of Oklahoma, and University of Minnesota.

So should I just not apply since I have like no chance?

Super duper bump.

One last final bump please more opinions…

i would definitely not apply to Washington University in St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, Emory…Id reevaluate, add 2 more safeties and maybe a few more tougher schools.

why do you need more opinions if you already know that you have almost no chance at those top four schools? I would focus on making a solid list of match and high match schools.

Don’t Listen to these haters. You got a great ACT score, great SAT II’s, and you are a URM. If you can explain to these schools why your gpa is so detrimental then you have a great chance.

^^ it’s true that he has great ACT with SAT2 scores and also that he is URM. But the devastated GPA with poor AP results will definitely pull him or her back even with explanation to these schools. For lot of schools, GPA and course curriculums out-weighs Standardized testings as well. My guess is it will very hard to get an excuse for GPA lower than 3.0 for these top universities. I think the chance is pretty slim, but I won’t discourage him or her from applying. There may be a chance.

how is your gpa that low…?

Read his post thoroughly.

did you write about it in your essays? too lazy to read

I touched on it and said that it motivated me to pick my major and help others. It’s not as cheesy as it sounds lol. My teacher is going to touch on it more in his rec (hopefully)

add more safeties for sure but you still have chances at the other schools for sure.

Dude, coming out of Oklahoma. I’d say your chances are MUCH higher than the average person with those stats.

I’m hoping that those schools will take your family issues into consideration, but those schools are highly selective so you might want to add some safeties. Good luck  Everything else other than your GPA looks really good.

Can you find a college with an archery team? You might be recruitable as an athlete.

At the income level you cited, you don’t seem to be a candidate for financial aid. Is that right?

Are any of your schools among the HBCUs? They tend to offer extra support along with their high expectations for students. They also tend to be less expensive than many other schools. If you’re going into helping professions, you know you won’t make a lot of money, so you need to keep debt to a minimum (if any).

I think you could maybe get into a school like GWU. Maybe WUSTL. I know that they are very selective, but I feel like they might be somewhat understanding. Not really sure why…even so, your chances are grim for this school. GWU? Perhaps a low reach. Your test scores might make you competitive.

But I feel much more confident in the sentiment that you have next to no shot at Johns Hopkins. Sorry to be blunt, but I have similar standardized text scores and a GPA a full point higher than you, and even I think that JHU would be a reach for me (I’m not applying).

First of all, having poor AP scores is not going to stop you from getting into those high selective schools. However, doing poorly on your GPA might affect you but, there are many URMs out there that are competing with your grades… I’m pretty sure you have a fair shot of getting in. Just make sure you have atleast 2 safeties and 2 matches before you make reach schools. If anything, a well written essay about your hardships during the time that you said your family was at risk then you can definitely get in. College admission officers will understand.
