I have no idea how IGETC works, can somebody help me?

I have taken every GE course required for IGETC except for Public Speaking, which is only required if I applied to Cal States.
However, it says that I only have 36 credits in the IGETC pattern and that I need 1 more credit. That would mean I would have to take Public Speaking, but I’m not applying to Cal States.
Can I still get IGETC certified or is the 37 unit minimum really strict?

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/general-education-igetc/igetc/index.html says that IGETC for UC requires 34 semester units, distributed as listed in the table on that page. If you want to apply to a CSU with IGETC completed for CSU, then you do need to add the oral communication course.

Will your community college certify IGETC for UC only for you?

Keep in mind if you have two years of high school language that fulfills LOTE.

@ucbalumnus oh sorry I meant whether or not I need 37 units in order to get my associate’s degree.
I’ve already done UC’s Igetc

@embemonkey It is not about the number of units you have taken. It’s about the requirement for each Area you must fulfill. For example, I took many classes so that I have more than 70 units in GE list. But I still need 1 more class (I’m taking this summer) to get IGETC since I have only 6 units in the Area of Humanity and Art whereas it requires 9 units. Public SPeaking is not in any area in the IGETC list if I still remember correctly.

@embemonkey Requirements (credit requirements/which classes/etc) for an associate degree are handled by your community college, your advisor can help you with that.

Just so you know, and you may already know, but associate degrees are not required to transfer to a UC. IGETC is more important in the context of gaining admission to the UCs. While completing an IGETC will get you closer to an associates degree, some courses required for certain associate degrees are not required for IGETC so some chose never to get the degree because it would require extra unnecessary courses.

I agree with @HeyItsNick. I never got an AA degree. If it’s easy to do it’s ok, but it often requires extra courses. It won’t really affect your UC application one way or the other. An AA degree does benefit a CSU, I believe, although I also got admitted without one. IGETC and major course completion are the key.

@Ohm888 Since the AA degrees for both mathematics and physics requires the courses that all the UC’s use as prerequisites to transfer, I am able to get both of them. However, I just wanted to know if CC’s want you to complete the whole IGETC to qualify for a degree

@embemonkey Sorry for not reading all comments before answering your concern yesterday.

The AS and AS degree in CA has one more kind called ADT - Associate Degree for Transfer. If you get ADT, you can use IGETC or CSU Breadth to satisfy the GE requirement.

But if you want regular AS/AA degrees from your school, then you must use the GE Breadth of CSU. Depend on your school district, you may be asked to take Culture class, PE class. So if in your CSU Breadth, you have a class both qualify for the Area and also in the list of Culture Classes, you do not need to take an extra one. Your counselor would give you the requirement lists for “local” Associate degrees better.

@embemonkey when I went I also needed two PE courses which I didn’t want to take. Yours might be different, you might already have them, or it might not be an imposition to take. ?

Completing an AA/AS degree is not necessary to transfer to a UC or CSU, but completing an AA-T/AS-T (associates degree for transfer) can be helpful in some contexts if you transfer to a CSU: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Pages/ccc-associate-degree-for-transfer.aspx
