I have NO idea what my major will be...!

I am 16 and i am thinking about majors for universities but i have no idea what my major should be. I do well in all subjects (except for math) but i dont have interest in science. I am very good in music. One of my strongest subjects is english and I always make movies using software on the computer. I would like a degree that would open up a wide range of options. And also i would like it to have decent pay going right from university. I was thinking about maybe a degree in bachelor of arts?? But i heard thats not a very good degree to have because you wont get a very good paying job with it. Help im very confused and stressed about this. Is business a good degree?? Is it hard to get?? I would like a degree that i have interest in but also offers good jobs. I would like to work in an office and i would like a job that is secure (if possible) and a bit creative. Maybe major in the arts (english) and get a minor in buisness? Ahh im so confused. Any ideas for a major? Ugh i wish bachelor of arts was one of the top 10 degrees to get, then i wouldnt be so stressed right now. But its at the worst ten.

You should speak with your HS counselor. But in general, an arts degree is not helpful.

3 options:

Join the military.

Get an Engineering degree

Stay home and work minimum wage jobs

ok, someone obvivously has not been out in the real world. There are far more options. Like healthcare. Or maybe, and dare I say it, skip college and learn a trade. Get yourself a good apprenticeship and you will be hiring liberal arts majors to wash your bathrooms.

Take a breath. haha. I’m in college and I don’t know what I want to do. All I can suggest is get as many college credits as you can in high school so you can look around in college. Im currently an accounting major looking into MechE and because I came in with 21 credits I have the room to take a few classes in MechE and see if I like it. You have plenty of time. Besides, one statistic said the average American changes careers paths about 7 times. This doesn’t mean getting promoted and changing job titles, this means going from news paper writer to real estate agent (my dad) or from elementary school secretary to bookeeper (my mom). Chill and enjoy high school.

Lily94, many students at your stage don’t know what they are going to do career-wise, and those who think they do often change their minds down the road. Your best bet is to apply to a college with a wide range of options, that doesn’t force you onto a rigid career track right away. A college of arts and sciences will typically, in fact, require you to take courses in a variety of fields during your first two years–typically humanities, social sciences, arts, science, and math, though different schools have different requirements. This will give you time to explore. Many subjects aren’t taught in high school so it’s hard to know whether you might enjoy them, and others are very different on a college level than earlier on.

Don’t just think about what subjects you like or excel at in school, but what your talents and interests are outside an academic setting. For instance, are you good with children? Do you like organizing things? Are you good speaking in front of a crowd or debating issues? Explaining complicated concepts in simple terms? Do people ask you for advice with their life problems? Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team? Do you like to work outdoors? Your answers to such questions might point the way to a possible career. Also, colleges and universities have career centers available with counselors who can help you think all this stuff through.
