I don’t want to call myself “boring”, but nothing has really happened to me that would make a good college essay. I get good grades and would like to apply to some fairly selective schools. I am told to write about something that shaped who I am today, but the only thing that has really done that significantly is my sport. Unfortunately, sports are one of those things that you aren’t supposed to write about. I’m sure that I can get help when I return to school in the fall, but I would like to start before that. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
Who told you that? If that shaped you most significantly, then writing about sports shouldn’t be a bad idea.
I always heard that everybody writes about sports and that’s boring.
I don’t know who you’ve heard that from but they’re wrong. When you say college essays, I’m assuming its the admission prompts.
As said before, if sports impacted you significantly, then by all means write it. If you focused on sports then sports did shape who you are today. Did it teach you about teamwork? Did it teach you to be tenacious? Did it teach you the value of perseverance through hardship? What did you do when you faced obstacles? etc. There’s a lot of things you can write about. Write about how it impacted you and why sports was important to you?
College essays is a way for the admission team to get a glimpse of who you are as whole entire person instead of just scores and data. So write about what’s important to you and let them see that!
