I have not applied yet...am I screwed?

Procrastination...story of my life.

Long story short, I live in the Buckeye state, love UM, but is frustrated with UM's OOS cost and pitiful FA and few scholarships. So I took it off my list.

However, I have always been interested in joining the military (military brat) so I considered ROTC. However, I did not want to limit my options after graduation, and I like 3 branches just about equally, so I didn't really want to limit myself to one.

But, about in November (kind of late of ROTC), I decided, screw it, it's non-binding if you apply and I don't really have anything to lose.

So I applied for NROTC. And this would be the only way I'd be able to afford UM, so I added UM back to my list.

Anyways, I have not applied yet, I have until 2/1. But I went to see my college counselor a couple days ago ( he had been gone for like 2 months haha, thanks dude). And he flat out told me I wasn't going to get in if I applied this late.

He's also the same guy who told me I was going to get into all of my schools (Penn, Georgetown, Northwestern, some other Ivies and top schools, etc...). That was in the beginning of the year when I was giving him my list. My stats (below) are solid, but not amazing. Then, right before he leaves he had meetings with all of us to discuss final plans and how he could help us in Florida until he gets back. And then he tells me I might not get into any of my hard/reach schools (which is true...but your telling me this now, really, in December?).

So my counselor has been all over the place and I just want to ask here

My stats are solid, I am proud of them, but they are not CC spectacular.

GPA: 3.8ish/4.22
SAT: 2110 SAT1, 790 USH SAT 2
ECs: Eagle Scout, Student Govt, a lot of volunteering, camp counselor, 1-2 jobs throughout H.S., EM, APUSH student of the year, grant writing, etc...

So I think I am competitive, but who knows.

So, do I have a chance or I did I screw myself over by waiting until the last minute?

You are definitely competitive if you have taken your fair share of AP/Honor courses. Applying this late is unpredictable but you certainly have a fair chance to get in. With all due respect, I don’t agree with your college counselor.

Bro, don’t stress it. Go ahead and apply and see what happens. Your stats look pretty good, but it doesn’t mean whether you’re in or not. Because of the Common App, ****load of people are applying to Michigan, and that’s causing Michigan to weed out a lot of people, even some of the good ones. But go ahead and apply man. You get in, congratulations. If you don’t, well, that’s a rough one. Good luck.

Ok thanks.

I literally payed the $65 the night before I went and talked to him so I was going to apply regardless of what he said haha.

Thanks guys.

Edit: Oh and my schedule is fairly rigorous, but not extreme, 5 APs, and mostly Honors classes on my transcript.

Be sure to get on Wolverine access to make sure your application is complete. Not sure I would trust your counselor to be timely.

Ah exactly same problem with me.

I still haven’t applied. I just paid today and I’ll start my application today or tomorrow. I heard that it’s extremely hard to get into Michigan if I apply too late (which I am), it being rolling admissions at all.

My numerical stats are good but I have below average EC’s so well it won’t be too easy. Wouldn’t hurt to apply now that I paid though. I just don’t want to hear too late…

dude your counselor is an irresponsible *******. You are most likely not going to get into all your top schools (especially the ivies) with below average SATs and average GPA (by those school’s average admit stats). Please don’t take this as an insult but rather an observation. I don’t think you should trust your counselor.
obviously I am wrong if you have some major hooks like being an URM etc.

A 4.0 NMF, eagle scout who graduated last year from our high school was rejected by U of M. Heard his application was too late. He is on a full ride elsewhere.

It is unpredictable but not impossible when you apply so late. I know several people admitted last year with stats similiar to the OP, but I also know someone ended up on waitlist despite being admitted to Chicago, Northwestern, Cornell, CMU and UCB. All of them applied in the last two weeks of January.

What do you guys mean when you say “that you have paid but haven’t started the application yet?” I thought you only paid when you submitted the application?

i applied januarry 26th last year and got in, then got in as a preadmit a couple days later
2250 sats, 4.7, 34 act, student government. this year will be screwy with admissions but i vaguely remember hearing somewhere their # of admissions is shaped like an widened out U, with a lot of people being accepted in the beginning with respect to the number that applied, a medium amout in the middle with respect to the large number that applied, and then a large number of (qualified or over qualified) people being accepted relative to extremely smaller number of applicants, if that makes sense

I’m starting now.

Is the deadline 11:59PM on Jan 31st or 11:59PM on Feb 1st?

I would think it would be the latter but Michigan said “midnight on Feb 1st” so I’m confused.

Midnight on 2/1 (about to enter the start of 2/2). Good luck.

I thought it was 11:59 on Jan. 31st? Oh well…

And, dear god impetuous.

I think it’ll work a little different this year.

Based on the number of people waitlisted and people that haven’t received a decision, and the fact that so many more people are applying this year and they know that many common app people will apply on the last day, I’m guessing that they’re taking the strongest people who applied earlier and for everybody else it’ll just be like regular decision.

I’m not sure if that’s what they’re doing, but I’d guess that the use of common app this year will make it hard to predict what they’re doing now based on what they’ve done before.

Ahh I fell asleep again.

I’ll still submit it a few hours before the deadline I think. I started researching about Michigan so I’ll be able to write the essay.

Just submitted my app! We’ll see how much of an effect a late app has on Michigan’s decision.

Just submitted mine too! wheee

Haha good luck to the late ones :P
