I have some questions about jobs/careers

What are some of the places graduates end up working?
If you have any links or personal stories/experiences I would appreciate them!

Where can you do internships, especially for someone with a computer science degree ?

Thanks!

**I don’t know if there is a thread like this already, but if there is I apologize :)!

With a Computer Science degree there are many options available.

Since the state of Alabama is home to Cummings Research Park (the second largest research park in the nation), there are many high tech Fortune 500 and also small techie companies in this state. Those are a great source for internships, co-ops, or jobs.

<a href=“Huntsville/Madison County Chamber”>Huntsville/Madison County Chamber;

Click on the links of the companies there…the lists will come up in boxes that need to be scrolled.

The location of CRP in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area and close proximity to the Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center has built the park into one of the world’s leading science and technology business parks.
The park can be viewed while traveling on Interstate 565, and Research Park Boulevard (AL 255).
Cummings Research Park covers an area of 3,843 acres (15.55km2), and employs roughly 25,000 employees.
There are currently 175 buildings that house more than 285 different companies.
The park has a current capacity of 9,000,000 square feet (840,000m2).
Major industries are aerospace, defense, engineering, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, software development and information technology.

Huntsville AL is a very modern city, and its nickname is Rocket City. It’s also considered by Forbes magazine to be one of the USA’s Geekiest Cities.

The people there are from all over the US.

I think you’re from Calif? Is that right? Huntsville is a lot like south Orange County.

Of course, grads also get jobs in their own home states if that’s desired. Google is also known to hire grads.

Wow! That’s awesome! I am so excited for college!!
Thank you!

For summer experiences, you can also look here…

[nsf.gov - REU Sites - US National Science Foundation (NSF)](<a href=“Search Results for REU Sites | NSF - National Science Foundation”>REU Sites | NSF - National Science Foundation) <= These are REU’s (Research experience for undergraduates). These are all funded experiences. You’ll get paid, be provided housing, and (usually) be given travel money.

http://reu.eng.ua.edu/</a></p>

You can apply to ANY university’s REU…anywhere a REU is offered. These programs are REQUIRED to accept students from other univs for their programs. They can accept a few from their own univs, but they must accept other schools’ students as well since the funding is from the Nat’l Science Foundation.

Both of my kids did REUs on other univs campuses. They’ll tell you that those were the most fun, exciting, and informative experiences that they had…and they made friends that they still keep in contact with.

APPLY EARLY to these programs. Get your LORs in order. And apply to several!!!

For other STEM areas…look here

Yep. I am from California, but I have never been to Orange County haha! Thanks for all your help!

Have you seen this [The Career Center](http://career.ua.edu/employers/calendarParticipants.cfm?CFID=914)

There are many tech companies at CRP, and certainly lots of engineering jobs, but are there actually many internships? Checking a bunch of those company websites, it seems if they have internships at all, they are located elsewhere. Anyone here have success stories with internships at CRP?

Yes, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, NASA, and Redstone Arsenal (US Army) all offered summer internships to my kids. They also applied to Benchmark and a few others who had internship offers, but they didn’t get those positions.

Internship offers come at all times of the year for summer. Some companies don’t know their summer internship budgets until after Feb, so those opportunities can come late.

I’d be interested to hear success stories in landing internships/jobs in CRP if you are not from Huntsville. Sons friends from Huntsville who got internships there secured them through connections, not because of online apps, which is what those of us who don’t live there have to do. Like Chardo said, many of these internships are located elsewhere, and many were more inclined to hire local kids than a kid who would have to relocate, even if they’re willing to do it on their own dime.

I work in IT for a major manufacturing company in Memphis, TN. I know we hire interns and grads from Bama into the IT departments. Have spoken to a number of them, but haven’t managed to hire any into my team…yet.

So would any of you say that large tech companies hire grads from UA? Do you know any other tech companies that like graduates from UA?
Thanks!

Personally, I know of Bama eng’g grads at Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Nasa, as well as Redstone Arsenal. My H has hired Bama grads and he’s been very pleased with their performance.

My brother, recently-retired VP for DirecTV in Calif tells me about Bama grads that his managers have hired. DirecTV is also a good place for internships…the bldgs are super close to LAX so easy to get to.

As mentioned above, Memphis Guy works for a large company who has hired Bama grads, altho he personally hasn’t yet hired for his own group (but sounds like he’s planning on it.)
