What’s it like for those coming from OOS?
Is it more challenging for a girl to get into a sorority if she doesn’t know anyone from "back home’?
Since many kids are from Ohio, do a lot go home on the weekends and for short breaks?
Where do the grads tend to find work after graduation? Ohio cities? Chicago? All over?
Do you think there is an intellectual vibe if you want one?
Thanks so much in advance.
sororities I can’t help you on.
Most kids stay on campus over the weekends.
Grads are heavily recruited and go everywhere.

Intellectual vibe, yes, the school is heavily weighted towards business and education majors,
resulting in a more ‘career vibe’ than most schools it’s size. (Huge job fairs in business attire for example)
@gojack Thank you for your response. I will check out those links.
@citymama9 - My son is a rising junior, majoring in biomedical engineering. He is OOS from Phoenix. His freshman roommates in the Honors dorm were from California and Virginia. 35% of Miami students are OOS. My son loves it at Miami. He is not in a fraternity.
Engineering is also a popular major, with about 2000 students.
When you say the school is heavily heavily weighted towards business majors, does that mean applying as a business major would increase your Chances of acceptance ? Thanks
@lostsenior4829 I don’t think applying into FSOB would increase your chances. Farmers School of Business is extremely competitive and has an excellent reputation. However, if you want to major in business then you should declare business. It’s not easy to transfer into business once at Miami. You must have a 3.5 gpa and a certain (?) number of credit hours.
My S is OOS, applied EA, and was accepted into engineering when he applied last fall 2016.
There’s a lot to love about Miami, no matter what your major.
@Masterof2 Thanks for your reply. Would you have any tips on increasing chances of getting accepted to Miami U. I heard applying EA increases chances, is that true for Miami do you know? THanks
Early Decision Advantages
Higher acceptance rate than other decision plans. Students who apply Early Decision have an advantage over applicants who choose our other application types. Early Decision applicants typically show great personal and academic promise, and send a strong message by indicating Miami as their first choice college. Considering the size of the Early Decision applicant pool, the acceptance rate is typically higher than other decision types.
-coming from oos is cool and its fine bc something crazy like 35% of students come from oos
-for sororities, all women who make it to pref round are guaranteed a bid. knowing someone from home may help you get into one specific sorority, but you can still get into a sorority oos
-not many people go home for weekends or short breaks (labor day, fall break), but i had a friend who was here over thanksgiving and she said campus was totally dead. my big and grandbig both live about an hour away from campus but they dont go home frequently. ive been home more times than they have, and ive only been home twice!
-grads usually go to ohio cities, indy, chicago, or their home city
-if you want an intellectual vibe, you can find it through organizations, but mind, this is a party school, so after 9pm, everything goes from studious to a fun time
pm me if you have any more questions!
@musiclover131 Thank you so much. Very helpful!!!
FWIW, I wouldn’t characterize Miami as a party school. I’d say it’s middle of the road in terms of partying. If a party school is desired, try Ohio University.
Oh yeah. Ohio U is loads of fun.
