Hi everyone, I have until Friday to decide whether I want to go to Wesleyan University in CT or Claremont McKenna College in CA. Just to tell you a little bit about me, I'm a girl from PA who's not sure what she wants to do as a profession but is interested in activist type stuff (whatever that means) and likes to mix academics with being really social. I honestly have no idea which to pick and I would appreciate any advice anyone could give. If you have more questions about me feel free to ask.

Sounds like Wesleyan to me.

what do you think?

Do you want liberal activist (Wesleyan) or conservative activist (Claremont McKenna)?

I am a more liberal person, but I don't mind going to school with people that have different political ideals than me, I actually think that might make it a little more interesting.

have you thought about weather?

yes, claremont has the biggest draw when it comes to weather of course because southern california is pretty perfect when you're not dealing with smog. I think Claremont's location, in terms of the weather, and just being in a new place like California in general, is the school's biggest draw for me. But that's just one small aspect and it hasn't helped me come to a decision yet.

You may want to consider the respective college towns. Claremont, from what I understand, is pretty upper to upper-middle class; not a lot of community service or outreach programs in the immediate environs. Middletown is very much a blue collar town with Wesleyan students highly visible in the downtown area, tutoring, giving music lessons -- that sort of thing.

I say go for Wesleyan. You will love the liberal atmosphere and you won't have to book flights way in advance to go home! My D1 will be nearby at Conn Coll!!

I'm pretty sure Wesleyan is within driving distance of PA, so couldn't you fly to CA and then do a quick drive to Wesleyan another time?

Have you visited each campus? If yes, what did you think?

I have visited both, they're both very beautiful campuses. What I didn't do was an overnight at either school and I'm wishing I had. I think my different experiences would help me decide.

When I visited Wes overnight, the general consensus was that Wes used to be really activist back in the day but now it has become a lot more preppy. I think it still does attract a few activist types, however, because of its reputation. I don't know much about Claremont, but my friend who's going there interned with a Senator and is very politically active. He chose it over Berkely because he didn't want to be around a bunch of crazy liberals like himself, but wanted to argue with people (most people at Wes are crazy liberals.)Of couse, I'd rather you went to Claremont, 'cause I'm on the waiting list at Wes!

berkeley, oops

where are you from in PA? I'm from Pittsburgh--trying to figure out if they're taking people from my area

I would say that Wesleyan seems to cater to your needs more than Claremont.

if you plan on living/working on the east coast, wesleyan would be the best option. likewise, if you plan on living/working on the west coast, CMC would be more appropriate. i'm biased towards wesleyan though (i love the nescac schools)

I would choose CMC. Though it really depends on what you want to study. CMC is amazing at pretty much all Social Sciences, with specialities including Economics, Government, IR et cetera. Also, another cool thing about CMC is that it is part of The Claremont College Consortium, so you would be able to take classes at the other schools, as well as interact with all different types of students.
