I know, I'm feeling dramatic today. The thing is, I did get into some pretty decent schools as a rising freshman, but I decided to go to my local LAC instead - I don't really know why, sort of a gut feeling.

Anyway, I've always been extremely interested in creative writing but I decided to try and forget those dreams to pursue neuroscience or business since obviously those are more secure majors. Well I took a fiction writing class last semester and I absolutely loved it. My professor told me my writing was incredible and I should be pursuing writing. My current college is strong in science and business, but they lack in English.

I applied to Brown before and was rejected, but I did get into NYU and Brandeis among some others. I've heard how amazing Brown's program is and it seems like the perfect fit for me. Now that I'll be returning to my current school for my sophomore year, I'm extremely confused about what to do and how to show Brown how much I want to transfer.

My high school GPA was a little above a 3.5. My ACT score was a 33-34. My college GPA now is a 3.52 and I know I can bring it up more within the next semester.

I guess I'm asking a few questions: how does one go about convincing Brown, are there any other schools I should consider, and should I just wait for grad school? Thanks so much!

I think your GPA is currently borderline, even with all 4.0s next semester for Brown’s transfer rate. You’d also need some exceptional ECs and recs to overshadow your high school GPA.

If you feel your current school isn’t the right fit, then yes, by all means transfer, but Brown might be a very high reach.

Best of luck to you.

Maybe look around for some schools that are a close reach that have an interesting program which would combine science and writing? (or was the science just a “please the parents” type major, not your true passion?) Stick with what YOU really want to do.

Since B is need aware for transfers, don’t ask for FA.

You say that you are attending your local LAC, are there public universities in your state that have stronger CW programs? B is but one of many schools that have excellent UG CW programs; which other schools to recommend depends on what type of school you want, location, financial situation, etc.

Many people interested in pursing CW go for an MFA, which relies more on your writing portfolio than where you attended UG, major, etc.

Thanks so far… As far as my ECs go, I work at the writing center, write for the paper, and participate in photography contests. I’ve also worked to develop different products and pitched them to local entrepreneurs and hopefully I’ll get into the immersion program for entrepreneurs in a few weeks.

I just really want to go to a school that I’m proud to attend and that has an amazing creative writing program with many resources/great professors/etc. I’d also prefer towards the east coast and somewhere that’s strong in a lot of areas which is where my current LAC fell short sadly.

What does anyone think of Hamilton? Still too hard?
