I haven't been doing so well...

Freshman year for highschool I got a 3.2 GPA. I got a D in accel geo, and my counselor says it’ll be fine if I do well in Algebra 2. Now, I have a C- in algebra.

I’m failing chemistry, and I have a C- in Spanish. The rest are As and Bs.
How screwed am I to get into UCI, UCSB, UCSD, and other colleges?

Does it help me at all that I’m an Eagle scout and I’m apart of cross country?

I’m thinking about hiding my F and D from my parents. I will try super hard to get straight As next semester… do my next semester grades make up for my F and D?

I have a B- in honors english, B in cross country, and A in world history.

UC’s allow grade validation by passing the 2nd semester Math or Foreign Language class with a C or higher, Science and English courses with D’s or F’s will have to be repeated to meet the a-g course requirements. You need to find out now why you are having problems in these classes.

Although UC’s only use 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation, you still have to self-report 9th grades on your application. Unless you get a tutor or work with your teachers to figure out how to best study and pass these classes, your chances do not look good for any UC’s at this point.

Work hard to turn things around and repost at the end of Junior year to see if the UC’s are possible. If you are California resident, UC’s are not the only schools worth attending. You are lucky to have some great Cal States and privates in-state. Right now focus on your classes and do the best you can. Do not worry about colleges at this point.

Thank you…

So basically I’m screwed. What if I retake the classes and get high scores?

Yes you can retake classes and replace your bad grades which willl help your GPA but it also put you behind in your classes. Are these Honors classes? Course rigor is important along with GPA. If you are having difficulry with non- honors courses, it will be hard to get a good course rigor into your schedule Junior year. Having high test scores makes you competitive but for UC’s GPA is king and high scores do not make up for a low GPA.

Like I stated above, figure out why you are having trouble in these classes and focus on finding a solution first, then worry about the colleges later. There is more than one path to get into these schools. Good luck.
