I have heard anything from Columbia--I never even had notification that they got my application, but I emailed them and they told me my app id number. Other than that, is this normal? A lot of the schools I have applied to have sent me tons of stuff, but not Columbia. What kind of mail have the majority of you guys been getting?

Also, is there a set date when alumni interviews have to be done by? I live in New England and figured there would be a bunch of alumni around here, but I guess not.

Anyone can get an interview--I believe it is just legacies who are guaranteed one (yes? no?). Most will not get interviews, however, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad if you don't get one.

You only get an ON CAMPUS interview if you're a legacy or son/daughter of a professor. Everyone else (assuming that an alumni is available) gets an alumni interview.

ilm525: You have to explicitly request it(i.e. call up the admissions office). Also, as of now, it's probably too late to do one since they're busy going through files now, but can't hurt to try, I guess. I did mine all the way back in October.

econstudent: It means one of your parents attended Columbia CC/SEAS. Candidates who have legacy status are treated preferentially, presumably to increase alumni giving.

Wrong about legacies. I am a legacy and haven't been offered an interview AND I live in the Boston area, so there's no excuse that they have no alumni in the area...I'm starting to doubt my chances...

yeah see I'm not a legacy, but I live near you johnnyhoward so what is the consensus? Have any non-legacies had interviews off-campus??

And when I said I haven't heard anything--I knew to check the status of my application, but it just seems like otherwise, Columbia hasn't been saying much. Every single other school I applied to has been sending me mail like crazy, so I was wondering if Columbia had already made their decision and decided not to waste their paper reserves on me :[ oh well, we'll see in april

johnnyhoward3: Alumni interviews are in NO WAY affected by your chances of admittance. While in the Boston area, there may be a ton of Columbia alumni, not all may interview, and those who interview may not have time to interview all applicants from the Boston area. Remember, these people have real lives, and jobs, other than interviewing Columbia applicants.

Also, to be clear, you have to proactively call up Columbia for an on-campus interview with an adcom if you're a legacy or son/daughter of a professor. Columbia won't ask you if you want to interview on campus; you have to ask them.
