How should i go about doing the 'why Yale' essay?

Do some online research and mention whatever brought you to decide to apply to Yale in the first place

Hi, as a current Yale student, I would also recommend looking through their site online. Make sure you mention specific reasons why you want to go to Yale. If you’ve visited, draw on that experience.

I’m assuming that talking about the residential colleges, academic advising, frreshman seminars, & shopping periods aren’t very specific or original. SHould i just focus on 1 or 2 aspects of Yale?

You should be honest.

There’s no point in applying to a school if you don’t know anything about it besides its academic rigor and reputation.

^ True, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have visited it. For a ton of people (myself included) this just wasn’t feasible because of costs/school/etc.

There’s a reason why they send out their little Guide to Yale book. Skim through it, figure out what interests you most, and write on that.

I skimmed through the whole book and my original statement doesn’t mention Yale prestige AT ALL. I just feel that the reasons i chose, which are honestly my reasons, are generic. THe trouble is, it’s hard to say everything i like about Yale in 500 characters. So once again, would it be best to to take 1 or 2 things I like about Yale and get more specific?

Yes, I would briefly mention a number of things and then focus in on one or two (or that’s what I did at least). Honestly, since the response is only 500 characters, they can’t be letting kids into Yale solely based on their “Why Yale?” response. Well, actually, now that I think about it…I think we’ve figured out admissions…

^ Nah, its not the why yale response… maybe the regular essays, but not that little blurb that’s the make-or-break deal
