is this true? i did sit in a chem class and it was a german lady.. the students told me the other professor was russian. i had a hard time listening to her lecture b/c of her accent, but the students say they get used to it. are most professors like this? i want to be able to understand what theyre saying.. not being racist or anything b/c i would love to be taught by a diverse faculty

Well, it's a little related to the fact that when you look for the best professors around, some of them are going to come from other countries, considering that the US only has about 1/20th the world's population. It's more the case in science and engineering than other fields.

But you do get used to it. Some of the TA's don't always speak the best english, but usually the profs and most of the TA's are ok. You learn to understand the accents fairly quickly, once you realize what syllables they're trying to say.

i see, thanks! if anyone else wants to input, it's greatly appreciated. also, anyone know of the percentage of undergrads that get accepted into med/grad school? (especially compared to ucsd) i'm aiming for ucla ucsf possibly ucsd med i want to stay in CA but the east coast is alright if its a good school

I think any reputable school that also strives for diversity will have a number of foreign-born faculty. While this may make things harder in terms of learning, it's very exciting to get to know these professors and how culture is like in their country.

I personally have had a Calc I teacher from somewhere in Latin America and a Calc II teacher from Lithuania. I also have a CSCI 101 teacher from India I think (the BEST CSCI teacher at USC!). Sometimes their accent can really make things difficult, but on the other hand, sometimes it makes their teaching style more straightforward.

Yeah, just because they are foreign doesn't mean they are bad. My calc I teacher was French, but he was really good; unfortunately, I cannot really understand a thing my calc II teacher says; he's the same Lithuanian guy that beammeup has. As for the TAs, my calc I TA was Japanese. At first sight, you might think "oh nooo" but he turned out to be an awesome TA! I hate my calc II TA...and she's a white American! Treats us like Kindergartners...ugh

Other "foreign" professors I've had are my academy professor from this semester; he's from the middle east but is a really awesome guy! Also my Russian Art prof was...obviously Russian, but he was a cool guy too. One foreign prof who really drives me nuts is my physics professor, who's British. I really wish he had stayed back in "jolly England" instead of coming here...:(
