I heard UCLA rejection letters are harsh...but ouch.

University of California at Los Angeles
405 Hilgard Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90095

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your application, however, upon serious reflection, we mean a quick glance, we can see that UCLA is not the school for you. We therefore would like to recommend a number of trade-schools, fine fast food establishments, or even goat herding as an alternate way of making a living. Better yet, the University of California at Riverside is now paying applicants, I mean accepting applicants on a regular basis to attend their fine (cough cough) school. (Flak vest can be purchased at the UCR Student Book store - next to the 99 Cent shop and the Popeye's Chicken).

We thank you again for your interest in UCLA, and we feel it was fairly obvious before you hit the submit button for your online application that you knew you hadn't a chance in hell of getting in. So it is with little regret that we have come to this decision. We do not expect an appeal from you as the Los Angeles County Department of Waste Management has already complained about our flooding their facilities with the mountainous volumes of application printouts such as yours.

We wish you good luck in all your future endeavors, which thankfully will not include us.

Signed,
Name withheld to protect the benevolent administrators of UCLA from you tracking us down because it is obvious you are mentally unstable with a less than impressive grasp of reality...seriously, seek help psycho.

LOL thats hilarious

lol.... that would sound funny if i didnt get the thin envelope today :((from rice interim decision)

Rejection from the UC happens in the spring. ;)

Anyways, I was bored and I thought it would be funny to write up a letter like that...man it would suck to get a letter like that. And then the letter would be stuffed with brochures for ITT Tech and applications for McDonald's and Burger King..harsh.

hahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahaha.

although exilio, i have heard that the UCLA rejection letter IS INDEED QUITE HARSH. i remember someone saying that UCLA "just has a way of reducing you down to **** and making you feel worthless"

Anyone have a copy of the actual rejection letter?

Man! I looked all over the web for one and could not find one..just people griping about being rejected but no actual letters. I will post mine when I get it..er..I mean, I am sure someone will. ;)

someone posted the whole rejection (and someone else got the acceptance) letter on the old board, but I can't find it now. It looks like you can only look at the first 20 posts or so on each thread now, so I can't read far enough into the decisions one to find the letter.

UCLA 2002 rejection letter

"Dear ___:

We have carefully reviewed your application for admission to UCLA and regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission for the Fall Quarter 2002.

UCLA received more than 43,000 applications for the freshmen class of 4,200. Given the caliber of the applicant pool, admission decisions were difficult and involved hard choices. EAch application received a thorough review by admissions officers, who took into account academic record - - including grades, coursework, and test scores. We also considered the opportunities and challenges students faced as well as person achievements and accomplishments, reflected through honors and awards, extracurricular activities, community service, leadership, and work experience. No single attribute or achievement guaranteed admission.

As we are limited by our enrollment capacity, we unfortunately cannot offer admission to so many fin applicants. Please do not take our decision to mean that your opportunities to attend UCLA in the future have ended. If you are still interested in continuing your education at UCLA, please be aware that students with strong academic records in their first two years of college may apply for admission at the junior level. About one-third of our new undergraduate students will be entering at the junior level, and the majority of these students will transfer from California community colleges. For more information about transferring to UCLA, please visit us on the web at www.admissions.ucla.edu/transfer.

Because of the extensive review process each applicant undergoes, we very rarely reconsider admission decisions based upon appeal. We simply have too many well-qualified applicants and too few freshmen enrollment spaces, and again, we ensure that every application receives a fair, thorough, and careful review.

I certainly encourage you to continue your academic pursuits, and wish you every success in achieveing your education goals."

It doesn't sound harsh to me.

Thanks for posting the letter, but I wonder why there are all the spelling errors...looks like this was edited, and poorly at that.

hmm i guess its not that harsh, unless you really wanted to go to UCLA, then you'll feel very sad.

but for example, columbia's rejection letter says things like "we're sure no matter where you go, you will succeed" or something like that.

There are spelling errors because i hand typed my brother's rejection letter up very quickly....i didn't modify anything....

Ah, cool, thanks for letting us know DJ. ;)

I assumed it was copied and pasted.

It's not harsh...although I hate all the namby pamby language...just say Yes! or No! That is all I need to know.

yes, I would just like a simple flashing yes or no popup when I log in to the website

but still..the UCLA people whne they say "thorough review by admissions officers" means only one minute...i mean..its ridiculous on how fast UCLA decide whether you are in or not. I mean..I'd say 3 minutes is pretty good for each person. And if they say its because of time..why not make the decisions posted say April or some further date than march.

the "comprehensive review" is a joke, how comprehensively can one examine another person's high school career in a minute

exilio - lol  cool letter.

Do you think it would make a rejection easier to swallow if you actually got a lighthearted letter like that?

is the ucla one really one minute that fast? i remember watching that clip on the berkeley adcom and they did spend some time enough to perform what i thought was a "comprehensive review" (checked through the important stuff-- sat, gpa, EC's, other circumstances), it was probably between 3-5 minutes i would say.

Yeah I saw the same thing. I would say unless someone has witnessed a review session themselves, anything else is pure conjecture...and when people are left to guess, they usually guess negatively.

If the process is similar to the one I saw for Berkeley, I am fine with that...afterall, we are talking thousands of apps. And we all know several thousand never even make it to review because the numbers aren't always there.

Does anyone have the link to the video of Berkeley's admission process? Thanks!
