A while ago I told a friend I wished to attend Columbia University.

In response they replied, "Why the heck would you wanna go out of the country for college?"

Then I read a NYC tour site which stated " The lesser-known of the two major Universities in NYC, behind NYU, Columbia."

Ok, What?!?

How come nobody seems to ever know what I'm talking about? IS NYU reallky better known? Why is Columbia not as easily recognized as Harvard, P, or Y? Yet it has the second (tied W/ Princeton) lowest acceptance rates in the US? How are all these kids not getting into the school but no one knows about it? Don't get me wrong, I love CU, but I was just wondering.

NYU is much better known. I mean it has the freaking state's name in the university name. Yes, Columbia is more known for prestige in academic circles, but Columbia loses name recognition for the average person. Though I think it's still pretty well known, compared to some of the other ivies.

I just found that website, and that quote was a reader-response post written by someone whose username is "BaBiEeMeLLy." She (and I will comfortably say "she") probably has relatives at NYU or something. And it doesn't help that there are lots of things that are called Columbia.

Columbia is very well know INHO, It was actually the first Ivy League school I knew of. Brown was the last I heard of.... come on? BU is an Ivy? What? lol j/k. ^_^ That girl jsut doesn't know anything. Columbia is VERY well known.

I mean to say it is in many movies: Hitch, Ghostbusters 1, 2, New York minute, Spiderman but yet it seems to lack the face value Harvard, Princeton, and Yale have, but oddly enough it has the same addmissions rates as Princeton (13%) and smaller admit percentage than Yale. I love Columbia, had family that attended, and have never agreed with the philosophy a school stood for and honestly liked the school. I personally would pick it over any college in the US.

So could it be considered underrated, not as established in pop culture, or have a bad rap for the 68' days?

no, if you really want to go 'overrated' you can always say "it's an ivy!"

downtown and the village > ...upper boring west side
stern business > oh, right columbia doesn't have a undergrad business school...
also
tisch > the film studies major...haha

whatever...i'm just teasing. i love columbia as well
but i LOVE NYU...

ur not getting what gay meant when u say it that way. Anyways
let's see
NYU
no campus
and even if i take into account what u said everything other than that sucks more than columbia. No there u go. Seriously don't deny NYU CAN NEVER EVER BEAT Columbia. Or wait, maybe u didn't know that since u couldn't get into Columbia and went to NYU. ;)

the NYU guy said he was just kidding around, enough with the would-be flame war, remember, arguing over the internet is like a 3 legged goose...yea its there but who cares?

A three-legged goose? I think that's pretty inappropriate. "two-legged goose" makes more sense. I'd be pretty damn interested in a goose with three legs.

sry if that comment was harsh which i'm pretty sure it was. Just got me a bit ****ed. My apologies. NYU is a great school just don't start flaming about how it's better than other schools. I'm alright otherwise.
