I just failed OChem.

Hello,
This is my first post on CC so please forgive me if it's under the wrong forum. Anyways I am a College Junior and a Chemistry Major and I just failed OChem 1. This is the first class I have ever failed in my life. Since I started my college career in Accounting before switching to Chemistry, I am already essentially a year behind and now I can't take OChem 2 in the spring. Earlier I received an email saying that OChem 2 had been dropped from my schedule because I didn't reach the OChem 1 requirement. Simply put, I need to take OChem 2 in the spring. I plan on contacting my adviser in the morning to ask if I can take OChem 2 anyways and retake OChem 1 in the fall. Does anyone that knows anything about this think there is ANY chance this could work? I understand that by taking OChem 2 I would be behind because I failed OChem 1 but simply put I need to take 2 in the spring but I believe I can handle it now. (I did get behind I admit) Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It really depends on your school. At my school, in any sort of science (Chem, Bio, Physics) you absolutely must have a C- or higher in any prerequisites unless you get special permission. However, some departments don’t care and don’t check.

You may be able to take ochem 1 and ochem 2 concurrently; I know someone who got permission to retake multivariable calculus concurrently with a physics class that required it as a prerequisite. Again, you’ll probably have to talk to an advisor and/or the professor of ochem 2 to see if there’s something you can work out.

Good luck!

I do not think it is a good idea. I got a B in ochem I but barely scraped by with a C in ochem II.

Seconding advising against, but an advisor probably won’t let you skip a prereq. anyway. Typically ochem 2 gets harder. You didn’t grasp the foundation enough in ochem 1. I work in a college tutoring lab, so I am mostly going off of observations.
I have observed ochem 1 tutoring and the same students who struggle in 1, struggle in 2 even more. Though it was interesting to gain exposure to some topics. I did my first bachelors in accounting and am switching to chemistry. Is there some kind of placement test possibly offered at the college or way to prove you learned the material from 1? Sometimes the college testing center offers challenge tests. Hope it works out.

I rather doubt that most schools would let that fly with a class like OChem. That’s a sequential class. The second part builds on the material from the first part. Failing the first part is a very strong indicator that you’re not ready for the second part. Even if it was allowed, I would strongly encourage you against it.
