i just got a letter from mit...

you know one of those things they send to prospective students....

and now im obsessed with mit :</p>

Good to know.

I actually refilled one of their little free pens they give out so I could keep using it... it was my "good-luck-smart-vibes" pen. :D

was it a likely letter? if it is then congratulations

MIT doesn't send likely letters. It was just a recruiting letter introducing MIT.

oh, so is the op a junior?

Speaking of likely letters, how much of an indication are they that you'll get in? A friend of mine got one from Columbia and is all excited, but I'm kind of skeptical...

no, likely letters are like youre in if you dont get arrested in the next two months. They are really rare and almost guaranteed admits

im a junior...and it was in a realy nice wrapping and a nice pamphlet with a letter and the pamphlet was filled with information...it was nice...so idn...i kinda wanna apply there now

Yes, The MIT info brochure I received was really cool and well made....
The way the beaver is worked into the brochure is awesome....

...I loved the Caltech one as well, especially the envelope....

The envelope was so  with mechanics equations and notes on it
like "...My Nobel prize winning teacher told me that ..." or something
to that effect... and then there is the reference to Numb3rs...

Of the gadzillion junk unsolicited mail I am receiving as a Junior these
two stand out (maybe I preconditioned myself to liking them )
... they are keepers :)

lol wow dude i got the same exact two...one from mit one from caltech...lol now i fell like i should apply to both just cause the damn brocuhures were so pretty

=P they were pretty and fun, but try to visit them before applying. It cuts out a lot of schools and makes applications so much easier (deciding where you will apply by visits and not brochures)
I liked the CalTech brochure, but hated the school and didn't apply, so visit!

Columbia (Fu Engineering) does send out likely letters. I recieved one last year, so your friend probably did end up recieving one.

It costs much less to apply than to visit figgie....you're not saying you're gonna go there yet....why not wait until after you get accepted (if) before visiting?

Of course, unless you live right there or you have the money.

Because it's worth it if you have a huge number of schools on your list, as I did. All of those schools would have added up in time, money, and stress had I not visited them before applying. I cut out at least 10 (more, I think) schools by visiting before applying. 10 extra schools' commonapp supplements or completely different applications would have taken a huge amount of time to complete.
But obviously if you don't have the money you can't visit all of them, but I highly recommend visiting all of the schools you can before applying.

oh great... I didn't know about the Columbia's engineering school and the likely letters, now I can be depressed about not getting one from them and not getting one from Dartmouth... it is like being rejected BEFORE you are REALLY rejected...... ;)

yup...MIT doesn't send out likely letters but if you actually got on their mailing list somehow then it means that you have some sort of potential and maybe something that they're looking for. It's worth a try to apply isn't it? I was admitted EA to MIT this year and it was a dream come true because I've been obsessed with MIT since even before I got the brochure =D. so imagine my excitement when I received the brochure followed by the paper application in the mail. lol...it was an amazing experience overall. yes, I also received those nice little brochures from CalTech and from some Ivies like Brown, Yale, Harvard, and Cornell. I didn't apply to any Ivy though. MIT > Ivies ;)

yea i think im gonna go visit...obviously im not acquainted with the campus so does anyone have any suggestions on what places to go to
