I Just Got A Really Early Acceptance Letter

Yea so I go outside to my mailbox to mail off another document to emory's financial aid office, only to notice that the mail lady already passed and i was too late. What do I see amidst the pile of bills and magazines? A kinda thick medium sized envelope from Emory's office of admission. I thought it was another letter asking me to mail off late documents to their financial aid office. But man was I surprised to read that first line, "Congratulations! We are pleased to offer you an invitation to be apart of Emory University's Class of 2011," or something like that. Cries from the mother later ensued.
Anyway, I was totally not expecting this letter, especially since I had just read a post a couple of days ago with people saying they didnt get their emory letters until well after april 1st, most of them even said emory was their last letter they received. I guess I should be flattered, but I'm assuming I got it early because one: i live in georgia, and two: there was an invitation included in the package for a 4 day admitted students program for african american and hispanic/latino accepted students that's happening april 12th-15th. so maybe all the students who fit that category are getting letters.
anyways, i was just really surprised to receive this letter and had to let the cc folks know about this to see if anyone got theirs yet.

congratulations on your acceptance

yeah if you look at some of the other threads it seems the Minority students who got it, got to know early.

Maybe it's just sour grapes because my daughter has to wait until April 1 or whenever....but is it right a particular minority finds out early and others have been chosen to wait? Why have a date if some circumvent it?

Sorry...just venting. But in terms of equality....everyone should find out in equal time.

It's not about equality its about:

a) Political Correctness

and

b) (stemming from a) Increasing minority yield.

Where is the political correctioness? Increasing minority yield, I am all for it. But why does it warrant a separate, and earlier, date? It's awesome for the diversity. Why shouldn't everyone find out at the same time is all I wonder?

^^^ i agree

get over it. there's nothing you can do about it by venting here.
none of the ga tech applicants find out their acceptances/rejections at the same time. many of my friends from school got their letters early february, while i didnt find out about mine until march, and there's other kids i know who still haven't received anything from tech. i don't think their method has anything to do with race.
but back to emory, their giving us our letters earlier because as others have already mentioned, they're trying to increase their minority population on campus. by giving us letters early, it shows that they really want us to attend and are interested in us, leading to more kids who will accept their offer since they show such a great interest in us.
they have enough caucasians, so they're willing to let them receive their letters later and sacrifice losing that student.

I also think they notify minorities earlier since they have programs to introduce them to the school (Essence of Emory). They need to notify them early so they can make time in their schedules to attend. But I am pretty sure the main goal is to increase the minority yield percentage.

^^^ You'd be right. I'm an accepted minority and in the acceptance letter it talked about the visitation weekend for Hispanics and African-Americans. The fact of the matter is, there's not many of us who get to attend these higher tier schools. When a school has less than 10% of a minority that doesn't make them look good at all. It doesn't really matter how early they tell you, if you're going to get in you'll get in.

I agree, isn't the major goal to simply be accepted? Who cares how long you have to wait? In the end, whether you get accepted or rejected, how long you had to wait is not important. And even when they do send out all the letters at the same time, not everyone is going to have that letter in their mailbox on the exact same day. Someone in California is not going to see a letter on the same day as someone in Georgia. Someone finding out before you should not be your concern, whether you get in or not is far more important.

I guarantee if any other deciding factor....say only Methodists, or left handed applicants or anything else, got their decision earlier........there be someone to say something against it. And I thought the purpose of such boards...to ask questions, to offer advice, to congradulate, and quite often, a place to vent.

Actually, the college can discriminate however they want- so long as it isn't based on race. So if Emory decided that methodists were auto admits, no one could say anything about it.

But it isn't about *********, is it? Nor discimination. Some minorities didn't get the email yesterday so they've concluded they didn't get in. Is it fair to those applicants?

You've also failed to explain where this policy is politically correct.

the ****** is a u t o a d m i t

well they were going to find out they weren't admitted anyway.

I don't understand why a recently accepted student should be forced to defend here the fact they received an early letter, or to speak for Emory's approach to guaranteeing diversity among the student body. Congratulations!

no one asked anyone to defend a position. I posted my thoughts and was clearly slammed for stating an opinion.

well I have a question..If I am a minority student and still have not received a letter..does that mean I am not going to be admitted?

1409 > i wouldnt be so quick to make that assumption- i'm sure not all minority students recieved an acceptance yet (we're basing this on cc stats and cc students are mostly great sudents). college admissions are kind of sporadic (as u prolly already know) so just hold tight you never know !! and i'm a minority as well - but i forgot to send in my sig page untill yesterday (faxed it over) so i'm basically in the same boat as you...minority and clueless =P

They didn't say in the letter that ALL minorities were notified. It said only a select group of applicants. We're going by the small percentage that is on CC to say that they only sent it to minorities. It's really not that big of a deal. IF it IS on minority status, MOST private schools do it that way anyway. Yay for minorities I guess? but I think the hoopla being raised about this is unwarranted. Everyone knows the issue about minorities in prestigious universities, so what you have to wait a week or two before you know, you're not going to die. The end
