I got accepted into Kelley Jan 8th (I applied late December). I'm from out of state (CA) and i applied to a whole bunch of other schools (such as michigan, carnegie, lehigh, ut austin) that i would rather go to. I have never visited Indiana and dont want to until i get all my other acceptance/denied letters.

so if i wait until May 1st to say yes, will all the housing and such be taken and filled up by then? do i have to turn in a mid year report or anything like that? if i wait until late april, will they still have campus tours and such?

also, can anybody tell me what the honors programs there are at IU and how to apply.

As an admitted student to the 2010 freshman class, the Office of Admissions would like to invite you and your family to check out what IU is all about by visiting on a special “Red Carpet Day.”

You’ll enjoy a full day of activities that includes:

A welcome reception and continental breakfast

Time with faculty, students and housing representatives

A student-led campus and residence hall tour
Check the schedule below. We’re signed up for April 9. I see they have later dates in April.

A lunch break, including time to explore campus on your own

An academic information session

Red Carpet Days will be held the following Mondays and Fridays:
March 1, 5, 8, 12, 22, 26, 29
April 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 26

Hutton Honors College is the main honors program for freshman and all students. If you are eligible you will be notified following your admission notification. Generally one needs a 32 ACT score and a very high GPA. I don’t recall if it’s 3.85 or 3.9 this year. You can petition for admission if you’re close or you can wait until you complete your first semester with a good GPA and apply second semester as a freshman.

Generally, all of the other schools you mentioned will let you know no later than April 5th or so about your admission/rejection status. You should try to visit most of these schools (where you were accepted) by April 20th at the latest so you can send in your acceptance by May 1st to the school you want to attend.

As long as you send in your acceptance by May 1st, you should get a dorm assignment–although it may not be in the “neighborhood” that you want. Those who ask for singles generally do get the “neighborhood” they request–even if they apply this late. Those who don’t accept until the end of May (or later) generally are the ones who have housing problems.

If the school can’t put you up in a dorm, then you will have to look for housing in an apartment off campus. Generally, freshmen will be accommodated if at all possible in the dorms, but there are occasions where about 20 to 30 (out of the 7300 freshmen who attend each year) will not get a regular dorm room and will be asked to room in a dorm meeting room or similar location. This is why you don’t want to be one of these last 20 to 30 students–and why some people choose to pay the $300 deposit upfront–even knowing that they will forfeit $100 of this amount if they choose to go to another school.

It went up to a 31 ACT this year. My daughter missed it by one. She has a 4.15 GPA, but was just short one point on her test score, having a 30.
