i was thoroughly impressed. i attended campus day yesterday (thursday 4/6) and i was the only kid from florida there (everyone laughed at me when i asked about hash bash and the student panel haha). michigan is bad@$$ but i'm committing myself to university of virginia (it was tied for my first choice at the start). anyways, i just want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me on this board, especially the moderator, and best of luck to anyone who decides to attend michigan this fall; it really is an excellent school.

Can you tell us what impressed you? Also, what goes on during campus day? Was there anything that you didn't like?

Im from florida too and Im got for campus day on the 17th.

Where in FL are you from?

Kissimmee. Its the disney hell hole of florida.

winter park (it's the "old rich" suburb of orlando)

the school in general impressed me. there are so many options at michigan and almost every field is at the top of its class. the presentations were excellent and although michigan is a large school, the program was very organized. that meant a lot to me; it showed the dedication they have towards students and how much they love their school. the campus was beautiful and each building was impressive. the food wasn't terrible and the dorms were actually pretty big and nice. they have some pretty cool traditions and the sports are (obviously) huge there. michigan also has the residential college, which is like a liberal arts college within michigan, which i thought was pretty rad (but definitely not for me). you have to experience campus day for yourself; the program will probably impress you. it's not just the school, but the way it's presented.

i'm picking virginia because it was my original love (it was the first place i really wanted to go to college), because the school is academically just as good as michigan, the weather will get to me at michigan, and michigan is just too big for me. if i didn't have virginia though, i would've been thorougly happy at michigan.

most out of state students that i met didn't like the campus day experience. I thought the presentation was great too, it brought out a lot of michigan's strength. But, calling the campus beautiful is a stretch. I have yet to meet anyone that calls the ann arbor campus beautiful. I've visited half a dozen schools that i've been admitted to, and all of them have better or equally impressive campuses. As far as architecture goes, Michigan's buildings are butt ugly. Some of the newer engineering buildings(IOE, the new CS building, Duderstadt) are pretty good though.

I think the Ann Arbor campus is beautiful so I guess that I'm person #1 for you. :)

i thought the campus was beautiful. the law quad was especially nice (it looks exactly like yale's campus). i thought the layout was really rad. i mean, honestly, i'm going to possibly THE most beautiful school with uva but i still think michigan's campus is great.

NYao, Michigan is not gorgeous or pretty. However, it is a beautiful and impressive campus. the medical school is awe-inspiring. the Law quad and area surrounding it (Clements Library, Art Museum, Martha Cook and Union are very nice. The entire Diag (including the Burton Tower and Rackham) is very impressive. The football stadium is one of for the record books. The arb is very special. Obviously, Michigan is not as beautiful as UVA, Vanderbilt, Stanford or Cornell, but it is still an impressive campus.

I live in Virginia, my brother was a prof at UVa before going on to his business career, seriously considered UVa in my younger days, and with this background encouraged by Virginia daughter to apply. She visited - and didn't want to go because she viewed it an extension of Northern Virginia high school socially, and was in a cultural sense still Southern and not very diverse. Its technical fields (i.e. engineering), are OK, but are nowhere near the league of Michigan. A great school, to be sure, but since our family's roots are in North, I think my daughter tilted towards Michigan. Just a perspective. Likely a different view from Florida.

Just curious, Alexandre, when did you attend UMich?

I attended Michigan from 1992-1996. However, I also lived in Ann Arbor from 2001-2003 and have been to Ann Arbor frequently since then, including November of 2005. The campus has changed a great deal since 1992, but for the better.

mam1959: well, i'm not into tech, so i'm sacrificing a bit on the business/poli sci front to go to uva, but i think the sacrifice is worth it. i love the history of the campus and i love the feel. i do realize it's somewhat southern but i don't think it's southern enough to detract me (i always wanted to go to college up north or in the midwest and yet uva still wins out for me). also, i know what it's like to be in a very "rich social southern" area as my small town is exactly like that. but since i'm from out of state, i won't have to deal with preconceptions and quite honestly, high school social life has treated me VERY well and i have no complaints about it haha

thanks for the input, though. i do appreciate a nonskewed point of view like mine

I suppose it's hard to argue with someone who insists the campus is ugly...but I don't think so at all. There are some lackluster buildings, but there are some breathtaking ones too. You can't count out all the courtyards, parks, the diag, and all the other tree-lined areas that are to die for in the spring. And lord help you if you think the law quad is ugly.
