I Just Got In Today! That was early...

Hey everyone...I'm absolutely thrilled, I just got accepted into UT engineering. When I tried to login I was prompted to change my password to something that included "letters" and "special characters" (so I assumed I something was up). I applied to the honors program (and was probably accepted) so thats why I got my decision so early.

If anyone else applied honors you should check out your status. Hopefully I'll be getting a nice aid package; too bad UT isn't my first choice though.

In case you're wondering here are my stats:

SAT I: 780M 700CR (680W--not counted at UT)
SAT II: 770 Math IIC, 800 Chemistry, 780 physics (1 sitting)
Courseload: IB (7 subjects; 4HLs also taking Further Mathematics)
Rank: ~1/24
ECs: Amazing
Essays: Great
Recommendations: Really good, especially the one from my math teacher

Hook: I'm an international with American residency. Also I'm Lebanese (which is a minority I think)

Good luck to all. Has anyone else gotten in??

No, I haven't heard yet. Wow, way to make me feel sucky. Thanks.

Just kidding. Congratulations.

Actually Lebanese people are considered to be white, unless you are of some small ethnic minority. Arabs and other people from the Middle East and North Africa have always been considered to be white by the government.

wow
amazing stats
SatII is similar but SatI is much more than mine.
Congratuations

Congratulations!

Post when you hear from honors engineering, okay? Some people are already submitting housing contracts specifying they want honors housing, and I think many people have not yet heard about their honors programs yet.

@MidwestMom2Kids_

Yeah, Honors program decisions are sent by mail and seeing as i'm an international...that'll take some time to get here. Usually, as I've heard, early acceptances in regular decision are only given to sure-fire candidates. It seems as though its pretty certain that if you get accepted early you'll get into the honors program (but you don't HAVE to get accepted early to get into the honors program).

@theloneranger

I'm actually from an ethnic minority from within Lebanon (i.e. I'm not muslim). I don't really know if this has any real bearing on decisions.

Officially UT can't use race and ethnicity at all in admitting you. So they use other factors like the socioeconomic status of your high school (the lower, the better chance you have), your own socioeconomic status, coming from an underrepresented high school, coming from an underrepresented geographic area.

As a general rule a college will take your word for whatever ethnicity you put down on the form. Many Middle Easterners will list Asian as that is what society considers them to be, even though the government says they are White.

May I ask, are you Druze or Maronite? I think Maronites are also considered to be White, but Druze may be considered to be Asian.

I'm maronite which means that technically i'm white. But ethnicity-wise i think that we're a URM at unis. Arabs in generally are not found very much at US universities. On all my apps i put "Other: Lebanese", i wanted to make it clear to the uber-competitive unis i applied to what my background is.

Also, the SAT W score gets you out of the Rhetoric class, which is required for all UT students. I think you need a 600+ for credit.

Congrats!! Just a small question, I applied, and still havent gotten a decision :( But then I applied late, and didnt apply to Honours at all.... It was past the deadline when I looked up Honours... :( I am also an international, and my SAT composite is 2180, would I be aiming for too much, since i sent my app only late Jan? Will the seats be filled already?

I can't tell you just by your SAT score, but its in the range of those OOS that apply and get accepted. I had 2180 composite, but I had disproportionate scores (780M and the rest 700s which looks better than 730 730 720). I applied quite early around late November but I had lots of missing materials and problems with my app because my school does things oddly. All my stuff was in in early January.

Honestly though, I think you have a pretty good chance. I think it was stated in another thread that UT has never had to refuse OOS students because it has reached its legal limit.

Yeah I applied on the last day of November and I just found out today found out yesterday. I wouldn't worry too much. I got in and my SAT scores were about 100 points lower than yours.

Timing DOES NOT matter. If you applied at midnight on February 1, you still get equal consideration to someone who applied in September.

Oh! Thanks! I also sent my SAT II scores, Math II 790 and Chem and Bio 740 each.....

@shruthi, UT Austin looks only at M + CR, not Writing (you got 1350 right?). So you do have a fair chance. :)

Things went faster than this board predicted for me -- got accepted to McCombs after applying Dec 26, oos. I figured I wouldn't hear til April 1

I got 1450.. Oh, I thought they looked into Writing too....

Sweet !!! haha , you just made my day .. Im also Lebanese applying to texas-austin but for architecture, which is pretty difficult to get in. But anyways good luck and congrats to you :)

ahhhh! congratulations!
I applied on february 1 lol. totally late I know :(. I really hope I get in though, its one of my top schools! I didn't do so well on the sat though so I didn't send it. but I got a 31 on my act so that's good I guess :/

oh,bitesizeemma ...
I applied on Jan.31.....a little earlier than you haha
