I was just trying to be more interactive and friendly with my online professor. So, I sent my online professor a joke relating about our course material. I got a bad feeling after sending it and sure enough it was a mistake. The next day, he response back: "yes, it shows the "unfriendly" : /" My interpreting that as he didn't think it was funny and insensitive to our subject matter. So, I pretty sure that he was offended. I response back that I am sorry and it was ignorant joke.
Did I do the send the a good reply? or should I just left it alone?

Yes, I think apologizing would have been a good idea if you weren’t sure whether or not you offended your professor. Your professor’s response confuses me ("yes, it shows the ‘unfriendly’ : /) and without knowing what you sent, I can’t really gauge whether or not it was offensive.

I guess insensitive might be a more appropriate then offensive because I can see how it can be viewed as mean way to make fun of his profession as a researcher. Though I didn’t think it was a mean joke but I shouldn’t of assumed that my sense of humor translate to others.
