I just really need some guidance...

hello everyone! I’m sorry this will probably be a bit long :frowning:

So currently I’m a freshman at a California State University and I’m majoring in film. I’m ready to transfer out for the fall of 2016 because first and foremost I want to change to an english literature major and my school doesn’t have this option, and also because I just don’t think a large state school is for me. I went to a small arts high school and so I’m having a tough time adapting to this environment.

Right now my top choice is either Wellesley or Barnard, but I’m also applying to Bryn Mawr, Scripps, and Emerson. My main worry is whether I’ll even have a chance at these schools, or if I should wait until next year and attempt to transfer as a junior.

My college gpa right now is not great (3.58…just barely made the dean’s list…). This semester I’m taking 16 units. Would this gpa be too low to transfer to any of these schools? My high school gpa was a 3.8 (4.0 weighted) and I got a 1920 on my SAT junior year, but I took it again as a college freshman and am waiting for my results. I took as many AP courses as I thought I could handle. I had pretty solid extracurriculars in high school, and in college I’m trying to be as active as possible (I’m in the band, spirit crew, BSU, and NAACP).

I just really don’t want to stay at this school anymore. If I don’t get in as a transfer to any of these schools, I’d like to study abroad for the whole year next year. My advisor wasn’t really helpful when it came to transfer questions, and so I’m very lost. I’d really appreciate some insight. Thanks!

I probably can’t give you direct answers you’re looking for, but I at least want to offer some advice.

I know Barnard and Wellsley are tough to get into and transferring is usually even harder. Check out their sites for transfer policies, such as the number of credits required to qualify as a transfer student. By no means am I shooting you down because your high school work is very impressive and your current GPA isn’t bad at all. However, I would assume that your college work is going to weigh a bit more heavily than your high school work, simply because it reflects how you’re currently doing.

I don’t really know about Bryn Mawr and the other schools you mentioned, so I can’t say much about those. Do some research on those and check out what your chances would be. If you find yourself meeting their criteria and you feel confident you’ll get in, then go for it! If not, you may want to work your butt off at California State and apply next year. If you go that route, try to stick to courses that are geared toward the English Lit area (provided they’re transferable).

Best of luck to you!

thank you @EmRaeee ! I really appreciate your advice
