I just received a "likely" letter!

My son just received a “likely” letter from Brown. The letter states… "The board of Admission recently completed its review of your application for admission to the class of 2012. I am delighted to inform you that in recognition of your extraordinary performance-both inside and beyond the classroom-the members of the board have voted to confer on you a “likely” status.

Although our official offer of admission will not be made to you until the end of March, you can assume your likely status means you will be admitted to Brown if you maintain your current record of achievement. You should know this communication, from our perspective, carries the same commitment, and is subject to the same conditions, as a letter of admission."

The letter goes on to talk about stats and the history or Brown, etc. Anyway, has anyone ever known someone who was rejected after receiving a “likely” letter this this?

Thanks so much.

p.s. We are in California (southern)

Congrats :) Is your son a recruited athlete?

guitars, I have never heard of anyone who received a likely letter who didn't get admitted. Your letter actually makes it clear (unlike other liklies) that it is the same as an admission letter. Congratulations!

"You should know this communication, from our perspective, carries the same commitment, and is subject to the same conditions, as a letter of admission."

No, my son is absolutely no athlete.

Congratuations to your son! At any college, I have not heard of anyone receiving a likely letter and then not being admitted. And certainly in THIS case, the likely letter was very very clearly worded that he would be admitted! Rejoice! What a happy moment!

congrats to you son!

did he apply for PLME?

Congratulations to the OP's son! I also came home yesterday to find out that a certain letter from Brown was waiting for me. I thought I would get waitlisted since I have not shown a drop of demonstrated interest (have not visited, called, or emailed the admissions office, even missed my interview and had to do one february 29 or March 1 on the phone). But I also don't have any intentions now of going to Brown.

BTW, like the OP's son, I am not a recruited athlete

If you were accepted early to Yale, why hang out on the brown board? Didn't show "a drop of interest", well, I suppose you didn't let that level of arrogance show in you essays. It is unfortunate that these are the people one finds at top universities.

picaro,
Don't judge everyone by Remi's attitude. BTW, my son was also accepted to Yale but he chose to attend Brown (and no, he didn't receive likely letters from Yale or Brown, yet he was accepted to both and to PLME). So, for those still waiting to hear, hang in there. Good luck.

congrats to everyone who got a likely letter! i wish i got one!

i have to admit that remi did actually make me slightly angry with his pretentiousness (lol is that a word?). it is good that you got a likely, and even if you didnt show "a drop of interest" do you really need to say that where so many people desperately wishing for such a letter can easily read it and feel like a piece of cr*p?

What baffles me is why, if Remi had "no intentions of going to Brown," he did not simply withdraw his application. Why waste the admissions committee's time, and why not free up the spot for someone genuinely interested in Brown?

i want to go to brown! but i didn't get a letter --- applied for plme

is there hope for me?

Probably not, sorry.

Some people apply for the sake of applying and saying they got in. I see it all the time at my school. Kids will apply to every Ivy, just because it's an "Ivy League" school.

helpneededrtenow, don't listen to Duper. You never know with the Ivies, their admissions can are unpredictable.

Leave Remi10001 alone. I think he'd realize by now that his post lacked humility and was neither decent nor polite.

I'm sorry that I'm tone deaf. Helpneeded, I would give you my likely letter if I could. Also, while I don't intend to go to Brown "now" (had a profound interest when applying), I'm keeping my mind open for the admit student days, so I may end up there after all. However, financial aid will play a big part in my decision.

Btw, I'm sure I was more honest in tone and character to Brown than I was to you guys/girls with an ironic post on this website. Honestly, come on guys, lighten up.
