So today i decided to check the schools i submitted my fafsa to and realized that NYU wasn't one of them! No wonder i haven't received my FA package from them yet! Will my FA be affected because i submitted my FAFSA so much later than others did?

user,

Sorry about the oversight. We commenting here not too long ago that NYU will still consider your FA app, but those people submitting by 2/15? receive PRIORITY consideration, whatever that means.

Just submit it now ASAP. Apparently NYU will still look at your financial app, though who knows what money they will give at this point? GL.

@evolving
yea… i feel hopeless now.

user,

Do not be hopeless. NYU still has to look at your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and your merits as a student at NYU. Pell grants and TAP awards have their own guidelines based on the student and family income. So, NYU might give you something, though NYU is not known to be generous with students in terms of FA in general.

However, you got to submit FAFSA now and mention that while the FAFSA was completed early, by error it was not forwarded to NYU earlier.

Should i call them tomorrow and explain my situation?

user,

It should not hurt to talk to them. Let them know you just realized this error and uncertain how it happened. FA makes a big difference for you and ask them the fastest way to expedite things at this time. They will tell you to submit the FAFSA. I think you can do so online tonight by adding NYU’s school code on the FAFSA.

Let them know you have taken steps and ask when you can expect to hear. You have not missed the TAP (NYS, if it applies to you) deadline and the Pell awards have yet to be determined because of the budget needing to be passed by the federal govt. (I am fairly certain of this).

Sorry, I just read your title. You submitted the FAFSA for NYU already. That is good. It does not hurt to talk to a live person and see what they have to say about your situation.

I’ll definitely call them tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your help. i really appreciate it.

NYU “Financial aid” IS NOT need based. So your FAFSA is NOT all that important. If you were accepted, NYU has ALREADY determined how much money they are going to give you, + or - a few thousand dollars based on your EFC. If you would like a more in-depth explanation as to how NYU “Financial Aid” works, please see my post:

NYU2013,

It was the + or - a few thousand I was hoping the OP could get and any Pell/ TAP money (if NYS resident) OP qualifies for, in addition to subsidized/ unsubsidized loans, etc. (I was just presenting her with some things she can say to stress the importance of FA, not that I think there is great chance OP will get most of what she really needs. Like many here.)

Also, NYU may require FAFSA for all scholarship considerations. At least our case, FAFSA submission is required annually regardless of financial need for sonny’s scholarship.

FAFSA is required, however the reason I said it was not that important - e.g. being turned in late. Is because NYU has already determined the scholarship by now. The FAFSA will determine eligibility for grants, etc. and possibly a slight increase in scholarship, within the tier of desirability.

So i got my FA package today… $41,550 per year !!! Unbelievable!!!
I guess what NYU2013 said is correct, since i received a 25k CAS scholarship while i expected nothing at all.

Wow, user, That is so fantastic. One of the top packages we have seen here! They did not penalize you for not receiving the FAFSA by the priority deadline. That is good to know. Wow, tremendous! So happy for you!

Was all of that grant money besides the 25K scholarship. Any loans or work study involved?

Again, congrats! It is good to be at the top tier of desirability. :)

Here’s my FA package:
Estimated NY State TAP: 5,000
CAS Scholarship: 25,000
CAS Eckhouse: 60,00
Pell Grant: 5,550
total: 41,550

And if you throw in work study (1,500) and Stafford loans (3,500) my aid totals up to 46,550. Since my grants/scholarship money totals up to $41,550, i’m guessing i don’t have to pay at all? thank god.

Wait, are you commuting from home? The 46,550 should be enough for tuition and fees, along with books, transportation cost and maybe some meals/ allowance money if you live at home.

Yes, it seems the amount you got coincides with the amount for a commuter:

http://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/financialAid/documents/tuitiongeneral2011-03-25.pdf

yea i will be commuting from home; i live in nyc. would you mind explaining to me how stafford loans work?

Did you get the subsidized or the unsubsidized stafford loans?

The subsidized Stafford loan is better.

[Undergraduate Loan Questions - What’s the difference between unsubsidized and subsidized loans](<a href=“What is a Subsidized Student Loan? | Edvisors”>What is a Subsidized Student Loan? | Edvisors)

I believe it’s unsubsidized. But, still, i’m perfectly content with my FA package.

Usually when the case for financial aid is strong, as I see from the Pell grant amount and the estimated TAP award amount, the student gets the subsidized Stafford loan, where no interest accrues while you are at least half-time in school or during any deferment periods (subsidized by federal govt). No need to pay back until after a certain amount of time after graduation. The rate is fixed at 4.5%.
