i volunteer at a hospital, and two of my coworkers (1 last year, 1 this year) got in. One from last year had 1100 SAT, another 1200. But they worked at hospital for over three years.

There are many ways to get into UCLA... If you have a 4.0 (UW) GPA and score a 1600 on the SAT you'll most likely get in. UCLA does seem to be rather random in who they let in, plus you've got a farily low sample to base that information on.

UCLA devastated a lot of people this year. A few people with GPA's well above 4.0, 1450-1550 SAT I scores, and decent EC's were flat out rejected. One of the guys I know who got in had a 3.85 and killer EC's, including a lot of work at a hospital.

All of the UCs caused a lot of dissapointment this year. It went up on a relative basis to get into all of them, and it seems few were warned. The counselors at my kids' schools did warn. Last year was bad and they knew it would only get worse. It's the new reality for UCs until the numbers go down in about 8 years.

even though i got into UCLA, i don't think its fair for people who had similar stats as me to get rejected. And abotu your hospital proposal...dats false. I didn't even volunteer at a hospital and got in. Its all about the essays. People don't beleive me because they say UC's can't read all those essays in the short period of time. trust me, they read it. Cuz if u think about it, people who had similar stats as me and got rejected, there is something wrong. most likely the essay

"UCLA devastated a lot of people this year. A few people with GPA's well above 4.0, 1450-1550 SAT I scores, and decent EC's were flat out rejected."

Decent EC's don't cut it for UCLA. Also, what about essays? Perhaps other factors? The myth is that UCLA is a number crunch but in reality, it is NOT.

"even though i got into UCLA, i don't think its fair for people who had similar stats as me to get rejected. "

Again, purely looking at stats is simply not looking at the entire picture.

"All of the UCs caused a lot of dissapointment this year."

They cause disappointment every year, because some people's expectations do not match reality. a 4.0w and 1400 with decent EC's is TYPICAL for the applicant pool. many other factors then come into play, and simply put, there's too many candidates for admissions with similar stats. just because someone meets--or even exceeds-- the typical UCLA applicant's statistics does not mean they will necessarily get in, even if UCLA is a match for them. i think that's where the disappointment is derived from... expectations that don't match up with reality.

basically like i said from day one: essays, income, 1st generation were major factors this year

All this talk of appealing is sad. People need to deal and move on.

yea, i mean there are reasons why some are rejected and some got in. i can't wait till next years UC book comes out and see what their avg acceptances are.

does ucla really factor in income? i thought that information was only for financial aid...people only knew a ballpark of their income in Nov. anyway since the year wasn't over and taxes weren't complete.
I agree that essays were a big factor though, and should be...it's an opportunity to show the admission officers a taste of who you really are...your real character and voice.

lol, i always thought my essay was the best thing about my application but i didnt get in. (well at least my counselors loved my essays oh well)

my friend got in w/ 3.6, 1100s, bad sat2 n i heard bad essay, little community service. but hes low income, 1st generation n legacy so i guess thats probably it! =)

UC's don't give any preference to legacies.

Plus no one can be first generation and legacy!!

oh, i'm not sure then, cuz that guy's parents didnt graduate from college, but his sis graduated from UCLA. so iono... sorry for my ignorance lol.

ill tell you how to get into UCLA, go to College of the Canyons for 2 years and they have a 90% acceptance rate to any UC as long as you take certain courses.

ha ha i totally missed that....UCLA should have counted legacy because both parents were there when they married....awesome story actually. mom was in sororiety and dad in fraternity when they got married and basically both houses showed up at the wedding lol. I guess the grandparents weren't too pleased with the presence of all the hooligans ha ha

jcoliver87: haha for real? that's very funny and awesome

Yea...pretty cool huh. They had an incredible time there and hope that I choose UCLA. I love the campus, atmosphere, sports spirit, and academics. My parents met in middle school and were high school sweethearts....dad went to UCI for a quarter and transferred to UCLA because he missed my mom.

UCLA Admissions were crazy this year...
10% acceptance rate.
And as far as i know they pretty much rejected every one of my friends who mentioned that they were hispanic.

I got rejected, and i've got a 3.4 uw gpa with a 4.4 weighted gpa, 1530 SAT I, 700+ on all my SAT IIs, i'm a national merit finalist, AP scholar, and lots of ECs. and i applied as both Caucasian and mexican-american (i'm 1/4 mexican). Go figure.

it was 20%...not 10%
