I know I don't look too good right now, but is there anything I can do that will help

Right now I know it's a long shot, but I'm just wondering if there's anything else I can do to get into schools like MIT or Caltech or similar other with the following attributes:

All honors classes possible taken

3.8 unweighted gpa (includes college classes so far)

Taking all classes this year at local college (Normandale Community)

Currently enrolled in Calculus III

Got a 4 on AP Calc AB

PSAT scores 215 overall, 76 math, 72 writing, 67 verbal, scored in 99th percentile, don't know about national merit yet

I'll be taking some SAT II's this spring along with the SAT I and probably some other AP tests

I have participated in: Theater-3 years, Marching band-3 years, Math team-1 year, Jazz Band-2 years, and Track-1 year. I am a captain of the theater company and a rank lieutenant in marching band. I'll probably be in NHS next year and am trying to get into a summer science program right now.

I'm one of the most ambitious students that I know, but after reading some people's repertoires on this and other sites, I feel really intimidated. Do I have a shot? Please, any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

yea this site helps less and scares more. but i think u have a shot... u seem to be involved in theater and band the most. are u sure u want to go MIT? i think u will get into other ivies. MIT and caltech, i think, wants more math/ science awards..

band and theater are my passions, math and science are my life, my school doesn't offer much in the way of math and science EC's

I don't want to discourage you or anything, but do you know why you got a 4 on Calculus AB? For students who want to get into MIT/Caltech, 5's on AP Calc are almost a given, and math/science awards are what get you in. If you go to a crappy school or had a bad instructor, your score would be easier to understand. I agree with crichessill in that you might have a better chance at non-math/science schools because of your theater and band experience combined with your math/sci interests.

The thing I didn't mention aobut the AP test was that we were only about 3/5 of the way through the class when the test was given, so we had to study what we hadn't covered ourselves in preparation. I'll take BC this year and I hope to get a five.

okay, so what if I got good scores on my SAT I and II's, say, above 700 or 750? I'll probably take some AP's too, probably these:

SAT II math II (do I need to take I?)
SAT II Chemistry
SAT II U.S History
SAT II Biology
AP Calc BC
AP U.S. History/World History
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
and maybe AP Economics

I don't know if I'll take all of them this year, as that would take a lot of time. I also forgot to mention that I applied to RSI, and I'm looking for some sort of science internship this summer if I don't get in. It's hard to find anything in Biomedical Engineering.

my math teacher said something about one in uva's engineering .. some session in the summer for engineering. u could check it out, but i should tell u... uva's engineering isnt that great

bumpity bump

It would be helpful to have a 5 on the AP Calc BC test - you could report that one, and not the 4.

You will need at least a math IIC and a science sat II, both 800 or close to it. Review the material for the IIC - it's been a while since you learned it. A science internship would be great if you don't make it into RSI.

You do have a shot at MIT and Caltech, but you should try to visit both if possible - you may find that they don't suit you. A school such as UVA - that is not math/science 24/7 might be a better fit for your passions and your life!

It's good to aim high - just make sure that you have targets that aren't quite so ridiculously competitive on your list.

i'm taking the AMC (again), I just missed the cutoff to advance on the first one, anyone know what a good score is like on the AIME? also, how is it layed out, I heard it was like three hours for 15 questions
