I know its hard but can someone please describe the U of M social scene

I’ve read on posts of people saying. Michigan and ____ are vastly different schools socially, and i dont know what that means. i dont understand this social stereotype people refer to. i’d like to know because it can be a positive or negative one for me, if i knew what people were referring to. I know that you cant compare a school without a division I team, or a small liberal arts college, to michigan. but i saw someone say Michigan and Duke are opposites in social scene? huh??

“but i saw someone say Michigan and Duke are opposites in social scene?”

Michigan has a fantastic social scene. If Duke is the opposite, I wouldn’t go there.

i wasnt considering duke, i just know that both have great social scenes, so i was really curious as to why someone said that. also would you say frats and sororities dominate at michigan or is it a very inclusive campus feel

It’s a very inclusive feel. Just reach out to people and you’ll make lots of friends through various clubs no problem. If you want to party you’d like the south side. So far I’ve made some great friends from across the globe. Have gone to some insane parties. I was just at hash bash Saturday.

To be in a frat or involved in Greek life do you have to live in a frat?

There are something like 43,000 people on the AA campus; there are also something like 1,200 clubs. If you can’t find things to do, you probably shouldn’t have been admitted.

That wasn’t my question lol, I’m just curious how inclusive Greek life is to people who may not wanna live in frat or sorority houses

For the most part, they are fine with that. While many live in the house in their Soph yr, it’s not usually required.

When they say that Michigan and __________ are vastly different, they are referring to schools that are completely different overall, like the University of Chicago or Swarthmore or Notre Dame. There isn’t much of a difference socially between Michigan and say Cornell, or Duke, or Northwestern or Penn. There are still slight differences mind you, but they are not night and day.

By and large, Michigan is so large, that everybody can come and carve her/his niche with ease. Not matter what you like or don’t like, no matter what you want or do not want, you will find hundreds, if not thousands of likeminded students. I can only think of one type of students that is better served going to different types of schools; those are cannot stand a large university. Some students really need to enroll in a LAC.
