I know its in the details, but is this too typical?

So I plan on writing my common app essay today and editing in the next week or so. I have an idea for a topic, but i dont know if it is strong enough for an essay. I also plan on making it somewhat funny through out, but still conveying the serious way in which the event changed me.

I plan on writing about how I live in a small town of about 2,000, almost entirely white people. There are families with grandparents, parents, and children living all in the same town, sometimes the same street, and the whole community is just very unchanging and not very diverse. There's a strong sense of closeness, but my opportunities are limited due to the size.

But, when I prepared all year and went on a Model UN conference last January, I finally experienced the feeling of diversity. I've never been out of the country before (except to Canada) and the conference was a place where people from every corner of the world came together. It legitimately changed my perspective, but I hope I can convey that to admissions without sounding too corny or typical.

So is this an alright topic? I was somewhat worried about it because would a school without a Model UN program look at it in a different way? or not? Thanks for any help you can give!

It sounds like a great topic as long as you don’t sound condescending toward the small-town people. Closeness and continuity can be nice.

thanks for the advice, i’ll definitely make sure to put them in a good light. but would it not be a good topic if a college doesn’t have a model un program? or would that not matter?
