I know i've asked this before, but i just want to make sure...(orientation question)

June 16-17 is the date I'm signing up for, because it has Spanish translations for my parents.

i'm worried that the classes i want will be filled up by then.
classes i want:
enc1101(freshman English),
mac 1140 and mac1114(which are trig and pre-cal),
Oral communication competency,
LS science course.

will they be filled up?what do you guys think?I'm just a bit worried about the math courses.

TK - my S will also be attending a later O. date. I believe I have read posts here from parents and present students that say FSU ensures fairplay by reserving a certain amount of seats in classes for each O session. I am sure others with first hand exp will weigh in. But I dont think you should worry.

Just curious, what is the "Oral communication competency" class? Is that like a speech class, or is it because English isn't your first language? If it is the latter, can't you take the TOEFL and get out of taking the course?

Chances are that by then many freshmen sections will be filled up starting at the times a lot freshmen want - 11:00 AM or 2:00 PM as opposed to 8:00 AM classes.

I'm confident you'll get most all your classes, since those are pretty generic, but maybe not at the times you want.

Soon you'll learn the system and know how to work to get what you need. It is still not unusual to have to reshuffle your schedule because sections are full. Always have several option classes in mind when it comes time to register for the next semester. The early bird gets the worm.

Students in Honors have an advantage in class registration - they are allowed to register with graduate and upper division levels, which gives them an early opening at classes they need.

Persistence always pays.

has anyone seen an actual schedule for orientation? is there a link?

D got a packet about orientation in the mail, I was thinking there was a sample schedule but I don't recall. Will look when I get home.

sunny -- it came in the mail? i checked all we got recently was a newsletter (which was excellent btw)

OK, not a packet, sorry. She got a Nole News newsletter and separately an orientation guide entitled Florida State University Orientation 2008. It has on it "THIS IS YOUR ORIENTATION CONFIRMATION" It listed the "Day 1 Orientation Date" on the mailing label with a reminder that check in is the evening before. It has a section on "Orientation Schedule." I never looked closely at it. Now that I have it in hand, it is only about general start and stop times. It goes into check in the evening before (mandatory) between 7-9:15pm, a first meeting for students at 9:30 that evening, a start time of 8 am the next day with scheduled activities until 9pm for family and LATER for students. The second day starts at 7am and goes at least until 1pm. The second day includes academic advisement and academic workshops, ending with course registration. It says a detailed schedule will be provided upon arrival, and that as students check in, they will be given their schedule/materials and matierials and schedule for their family.

Hope that helps. I suspect they go out according to date of orientation.

ah ha very helpful. thanks. it is all so exciting am looking forward to the whole experience.

I felt the same way as blueskymom! I had not even seen the campus until orientation since my husband had taken him for his decision tour. The campus is absolutely beautiful and all the preparations for sending your young adult away to college are both fun and exciting.
