But what's a mile time that will near guarantee my chances at Pton? Do I need to break 4? (I'm at 4:12 right now)

why do people post all this stuff on cc? maybe you should ask some runners, or better yet, your coach, or even better, a college coach. Why does everyone seem to think CC is the authority on D1 track and field standards?

Go and search the Parent's Forum for NCAA track. There is a thread on track. Glory be. I started it, for a friend. There are in fact a lot of track parents on this site, and they are very happy to be helpful to the kids in that world.

Wow. 4:12 .

Yeah, I'm twice that. XD

at this point I'm probably THRICE that.

I seriously doubt they'll expect under 4 minutes, seeing as how it's only been done by ONE high school student before (i think).

As of June 28, 2006, four high school students had run a mile in under four minutes.

A Princeton recruited freshman this year had a mile time of 4:11.5. Others had 1600/3200 times of 4:18/9:23 and 4:10.55/8:53.47 and one had a 3200 of 9:10.41. So if you have the academics, a 4:12 mile should be good enough.

4:12 is a fine high School mile time (Is that a true mile or 1600m?). It will get you a serious look from most college track coaches, including Princeton. However at a highly academic school like Princeton there is no time good enough to guarantee admission by itself. You will need to also have solid academic stats to go with your impressive athletic stats.

Do people usually get faster because they just get faster? Like in 7th grade, I was border 9 min - 10 min mile. In 8th, I improved by like a minute and a half, I got 8:30, and I did absolutely nothing to improve. Maybe a little running here and there. For people like me, what is their usual time in Soph. and Junior years? :p

rofl, that's olympics

if you can run near a 4 minute mile, that would get you a bronze medal... why go to princeton? just go to 08 olympics

I think for people that just sit on their butt all day like me and are of average weight, a mile time in the 8 minute range sounds about right. When I did soccer I got it to about 6 mins and I'm not naturally athletic.

rofl, that's olympics if you can run near a 4 minute mile, that would get you a bronze medal... why go to princeton? just go to 08 olympics<<

Not even close. A 4 minute mile is a good college time but it won't get you anywhere near the Olympics. It would have gotten you a bronze medal back in the 1950s, but today to even have a hope of getting an Olympic medal you need to be able to run a mile in under 3:50. The world record is currently 3:43.

Princeton's best miler was perhaps Craig Masback, the current CEO of USA Track and Field, the sports governing body in the US. He ran miles in under 4 minutes about 30 separate times back in the 1980s, and he never even qualified for the US Olympic Team much less won a medal.

oh and to answer coureur:

ECs:
Nothing that would make or break me (math, academic teams) except my 4:12 mile and 9:23 2-mile times....so I guess my hopes hang on getting recruited and then accepted.

Essays and recs: good (hopefully)

not to get your hopes up, but if you don't get recruited and accepted with that time and those scores...i don't know who will.

Good luck!! Maybe i'll see you there (if i get in, i'll be the slow one doing the steeplechase as a walk-on)

Eh, I'm not a fan of steeplechase lol, I'm a pure runner (even though I have a 25 inch jump, I suck at steeplechase)

But if you think that's good... I knew a kid who was smarter than me (at least I think) and had a 4:59 mile time/sub-16 minute 5K while I was still in the mid-5 range, and in my few xc runs, I did about 4- 6 minutes worse than my superior.

some of us have yet to break five. (5:03-argh)

Idk man, just rest up and try again. My mile time went from 5:05 to 4:25 just from a lot of rest (i.e., no physical activity whatsoever for 2 weeks)
