I know people make fun of UCR, but should I go?

^^^ Yup. Thanks for putting that into perspective CCC88’.

relativity… ha

I used to date someone that was going to UCR and I actually thought it was a decent school even though it is in kind of a bad area. I used to crash his classes with him and many of the professors were great. He lived in the honors dorm so there wasn’t much of a problem finding intelligent people. I think you really determine your own college experience. If you want to go to UCR, do it.

screw them, I was made fun of for going to davis

^
Wow, really? Davis? That’s harsh.

In the end, I really hope that what you pick is the right choice for you. Good luck! [:

Alright, a little update here.

I’ve been accepted everywhere I applied to except UCB, but I’ve fallen in love with UCD (after visiting both UCR and UCD). It’s in an area of the state that I love, not far from the bay area and not far from Tahoe, I enjoy the town and the people more, and it’s closer to my friends and family.

Riverside, on the other hand, depresses the **** out of me.

My financial aid package from UCD will be enough to cover my tuition, and in the end ill come out $11k in debt after two years. I’ll also have to work for my living expenses. My package from UCR comes with $15k worth of grants and $2.5k of work study, plus I’ll be living alone and rent free. I won’t have to work if I don’t want to.

I’d hate to live in Riverside, but do you think it’s ultimately worth it in the end? What would you do.

Thanks!

Sbeers-go to the school you love. I will come out of UCB with about $30k in loans, but it’s worth it. Don’t force yourself to go somewhere you do not feel comfortable at because you will not be as inclined to do well academically. Either way, you got a kick arse deal. $11k in debt is nothing. Congrats!

You liked Davis? I thought it looked like a prison in the middle of nowhere, but that’s just me. What are your other choices besides Riverside and Davis?

UCLA, UCSB, and UCSD.

I’m not very interested in any of those three as SB, SD, and UCD are basically on the same level. The prestige of UCLA draws me, but I’m honestly not that big of a SoCal guy. Plus I’m going to grad school anyway, so the prestige thing won’t be that big of a factor anyway.

If it were up to me, I would go to UCLA. That is the best option by far, but it is your choice. I feel that UCLA has a lot more to offer as a larger campus based in a large city. You can just think of all the sources for inspiration in LA i.e. museums, music, film, etc. The prestige thing may be a factor when you apply to grad school and they see that you got your degree at UCLA. It is your choice in the end. All I can say is that there is really no place worth visiting in northern California past the Bay Area. It gets really hot in that Davis area, but not the nice, coastline hot. The crappy inland hot!

Wow, a nice house for yourself? Sounds tempting.

working and going to school is not an option for me anymore. i’m never doing that again and never recommending that to anyone. it takes away from the whole college experience when you have “too many” responsibilities. so i recommend that if you can go any UC school rent free, you’ve got it made. you will have a great college experience no matter what.

I don’t know, man. Do your parents really want college kids living in their house and messing everything up? The rug will be dirty as f***, things will be broken, and someone is bound to punch a hole in your wall if you ever have a party.
