I know someone here knows the answer

how many NMFs are at UA?

is there a list that shows schools and the number of NMFs at each?

mom2collegekids likely has it.

*According to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s recent annual report, the University of Alabama ranked in the top 10 out of more than 600 public universities nationwide in the enrollment of National Merit scholars for 2009-2010. The fall 2009 freshman class included 103 scholars. *

So, if Bama had 103 NMF kids this last fall, then Bama has about 400 NMFs at the school.

[Top Scholars Program - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/topscholars/)

According to this link, UA had more than 550 National Merit AND National Achievement Finalists in Fall 2008. Of course, a “Finalist” is not the same as a “Scholar”, and the standards for the Achievement Finalists are less than that for the Merit Finalists. So Mom’s estimate could be much higher or lower than the actual number. I bet someone at UA could tell you the definitive answer.

I’m betting the upward trend of NMF @ Bama continues for 2010-2011 school year. I guess when they hand out the PCs you could get a rough head count. Roll Tide!

Dr. Sharpe (honors college) told us just the other day, during a Bama visit, that the 2010 NMF admits did, in fact, exceed the 2009 NMF admits. If I understood him correctly, this year’s admits will likely put Bama barely in the top 9, or just shy of the top 9 public universities in terms of numbers of National Merit Scholars. He said, if I got it right, that the total NMFs between number 9 on the list and number 8 on the list are huge – a gigantic leap – so it’s unrealistic that Bama would ever get to number 8.

At least that’s what I got out of what he was saying … hope I’m relaying it correctly!
