So I'm planning on applying to Rice next year...and really, the only way I could go there is if they gave me a big merit based scholarship. So this is really a chance for admission+scholarship...which I know is very difficult to get

I am a girl and mexican and interested in engineering (btw does the race/gender help...?)
UW GPA: 3.97ish
W GPA: 4.68
Class rank: none in my school

sat: 2260
780 CR, 770 Math, 710 W
sat II: 750 Bio M and 750 math 2

Most likely PSAT commended scholar

AP's: 5 in Bio, US Hist, and Art Hist; 4 in Chem (disappointing...)

Taken honors all my life and lots of ap's; I've gotten straight A's (no A-) in every single class except in APUSH--1st semester B+, 2nd B-

Senior year I'm taking:
1. AP Calc BC
2. AP Comp
3. AP Spanish 5
4. AP Physics Mech
5. AP Gov
6. AP Econ

The last 3 are semester classes; the other 3 classes I'm taking don't really count ( they're requirements): speech, health, and ceramics

EC's:
Science olympiad since 7th grade; won medals at state competition
Also was inJETS, envirothon (both are also part of academic team)
likely academic team captain next year (?)
Orchestra since 4th grade; Section leader for 3 years
Teach private lessons, was in all state orchestra, won performer of the year award
I volunteer here and there
I'm in DECA and got top 20 in the nation

I've done a lot of other random EC's, but I'm planning on focusing on academic team and orchestra, since those are my passions, and DECA too since I did well.

well the point was just to see if anyone thought I had stats that were good enough to receive a Rice scholarship…I’m going to apply no matter what.

It’s interesting … on the UVA CC forum, Dean J, an admissions staffer, writes about the process from her side of the desk. She also has a blog and shows up across the country pitching her school.

The Rice admissions officers who I met at Owl Days, and who had answered my questions about the admissions process over the phone, were extremely helpful, informative and friendly. It might be nice if a Rice staffer posted comments here. A real one. I think it would be reassuring, too – to learn more about how the process works.

I think im gonna talk to them about doing that. I know people in the deans office and the admissions office and it would be good to have rice staff representatives here.

HSjuniorgirl:
You have a profile that will definitely put you into consideration for acceptance. Just don’t fall in love with Rice or any other top school. There are too many admissions variables out of your control.

Since this is a long chance thread that may catch the eye of prospective students, I though it might be helpful to post the comments of an MIT adcom. Yes, I know that Rice is not MIT, but highly selective universities all work in similar ways…

Okay, so I stopped checking my chance threads for a while since I realized they are indeed pretty pointless, and I wanted to delete them because of that (but I couldn’t figure out how). The reason I did them in the first place was out of curiosity…So hopefully people will stop posting incendiary responses and just move on. but thanks to anyone who was trying to help! honestly, thanks.

i mean, we try to help, its just that there isnt much to do in a chance thread. I can try to answer anything else about rice - just not whether you will get in.

I’m also applying but I think you have a nice chance actually. Your academic performance is ok-ish maybe slightly below average. Your extracurrricular activites are really strong though. I’ve seen numerous stories of how people with perfect scores and w/e were extremely overconfident and ended up being rejected. These people did nothing but academics and were therefore probably ruled out as “boring” and “ordinary.” Your music performance is really outstanding (I also made all-state and I thought it was really hard). SAT scores and grades are really more preliminary checks in my opinion, and you’ve passed that preliminary check, not with flying colors, but passed. Also, your ethnicity WILL help you because it’s rare to have such an outstanding musician of your ethnic group and colleges all love diversity.

they make up about 60% of your application. There is an interview where the Rice director of admissions breaks it down. Still looking for a copy to post here

Wow, I was just reading the earlier posts, and I was really scared for a moment. I’m applying to Rice as a transfer (didn’t get in as a freshman), and have posted on CC a lot. I think this site is more to help freaked out people like me calm down a little, though, I must admit, sometimes it causes me to freak out a little more than usual. I agree, it would be nice if a Rice staffer would comment.
