There is no sub-forum for Kent State in Ohio and I would like to start one, as I have questions for the CC community about this school.

Thanks OU people...I know, I know big rivals, don't kill me. Maybe I should really stir things up, I am a Miami U alum and D is looking at Kent, Miami & OU but not in that order.

Okay let the yelling begin, just trying to get a Kent sub-forum...

Well, in the meantime. . . .I live about 3 miles from KSU, and one of my daughter's is taking some classes there this year, through the post-secondary option for h.s. students. She also spent the summer at Miami, and she has made a few comments comparing KSU and MU.

I may be able to answer a few questions for you.

Oh, do not have that ability enabled on your profile. So as not to hijack this sub-forum, please either go to Miami sub-forum or PM/e-mail me.

D is most interested in how Kent compares to Miami, she is interested in Visual Arts[Photography] and in Performing Arts [Voice, Theatre, MT]. Maybe Business and maybe Education as down the road options.

Kent State is one of the most dynamic schools in the nation. The business school is not that bad. The required courses tend to be large and have 200+ people in them. They are harder than they seem and are weed out courses, I didn't have nearly as many people in major specific UD classes. Once you get past the weed out courses (which some people seem to be stuck on) it is very hands on (still hard) with the instructors and you learn an awful lot. The theatre and and majors like that are clear on the other end of campus from the business building. Same with education. My whole time there, I had one class in the art building, one in the gym annex, and all the other classes were in the business building, or one of the buildings right next to the business building (Satterfield or Bowman) So basically you won't see to much of other majors if you are in an entirely different college (although that is probably the case at a lot of colleges)

Education is ranked as about the same as similar state schools in Ohio (BG, Akron, CSU etc) and one is really indistinguishible from the other.

Kent compares to Miami in that they are in some regards exact opposites. Kent is a liberal breeding ground, and there are a lot of crazy radical type people on campus. (although the idiot KSU and Kent police provoke most of the trouble themselves, I have never seen a group of people who was worse at crowd control than Kent police)
While Miami is almost on the opposite end as being conservative. Miami kills Kent in football, but our basketball team is one of the best in the MAC, (way better than Miami) and I think is poised for a tournament run come March as we are returning three stud seniors in Warsinski, Haynes, and Gerwig.

So I would recommend Kent, just because KSU never gets any love on this elite message board. Futhermore, Kent State has very laid back nice people, as opposed to the stuck up preppies (vague generalization) at Miami. Just make sure your daughter lives off campus ASAP, as the dorms there blow.

My daughter is taking three classes at Kent, as part of her senior year in h.s. so she's not "really" a KSU student. She has told me that she likes the people in her KSU classes better than the students she had in classes at MU over the summer. She was very surprised during the summer at MU that nearly all the female students were so dressed up for 8:30 a.m.summer classes. She described them as being dressed, and made up, well enough for a professional job or a night out on the town. KSU students seem more laid back to her.

I have been pleasantly surprised by a couple of her KSU classes. The local motto is, "Kan't read, Kan't write, Kent State." Her freshman English class, appx 25 students, seems on a par w/ freshman English at other universities, and better than some I've hear about. Her Into to Am Politics has about 30 students, and she seems engaged in the class. Her third class is Oceanography, a lecture w/ 400, and meets most sterotypes about such classes.

Frankly, a prospective student visiting these campuses could quickly decide which atmosphere they preferred. For the subject areas your student is considering, I think the quality of education at the two schools is quite similar. Actually, I think OU has a better reputation for visual and performing arts that either Miami or Kent.

Don't know why the Moderators aren't making a Kent sub-forum and moving this. The Ohio Northern has never had a post and they have a sub-forum...

Strange. Oh well, glad there is this forum at all, it sure is helpful in guiding our kids.

Is your daughter in the process of applying, or is she a junior starting to look at schools?

If she's a junior. she might like to try the Miami U Junior Scholars proogram over the summer. Students live in MU dorms, take regular MU classes, earning credits they can transfer on when they start college "for real."

She is actually a sophomore. But she has many activities and has attended a summer intensive for Musical Theatre the last two summers so she is getting an early start. She is an "artiste" in every sense of the word [read:go with the flow, disorganized but very creative and talented]. My H & I on the other hand are business people who run three businesses and HAVE to manage our time. If it was left to her, around September of her Senior year she would come to us and say something like, "Hmmm, I was thinking, I graduate this year, maybe we should visit some schools and I should get a couple of applications in or something?" LOL [I AM exaggerating a tiny bit, but not much :o]

Anyway, being an alum of MU and her mom, I have taken her there often over the years and she feels very familar with it. However, that sounds like a really cool thng to do. I'll mention it to her. We were just there in September for homecoming and met with administrators from the Western Program, Fine Arts Program & the Performing Arts Program. They didn't mention it, but probably because she is so young yet.
She is also looking at Kent & OU because having been to those campuses, I think the atmosphere will fit her and they have the programs she is interested in.

Has she looked at U of Cinti for performing arts? Maybe it's too urban. . . from your list, it looks like you're looking at colleges in college town.

You might look over MU's Junior Scholars Program course listing for this coming summer, to get an idea of courses the students can enroll in--I don't know if there are any in performing arts. My D took a Spanish class and a microbiology class.

Oh yes CCM is considered one of if not THE MT-Ivy. However, you are correct, she wants "college town." Also, CCM is SUPER exclusive to get into AND she is waffling between Photography and MT.

We have visited Cinci [but not UC] many times in the past and she does like the feel of that city, just not ready to give up her collegey requirement.

Kent, OU & Miami are just several of her Ohio schools. She also wants to take a look either virtually or literally at schools in New England, PA, CO, OK, AZ, KS, MI, MN, IA, MO and IL... Now do you see why we are starting her so early exploring all this? LOL

I'm not too concerned about her getting a feel for Miami, as she is pretty sold on it already. Cute story, please indulge me... When she was four she was looking at a sweatshirt with Miami in big letters on it. My h asked her if she knew what that said and she replied "Miami!" So then he asked her if she knew what that was, and she replied very matter of factly, "That's where you go after high school!" I laughed hystericly, my h [attended Western State in Colorado & grad from UW Eau Claire] was not amused.

believersmom, i ultimately have no idea the type of people who attend Miami, that is why I put generalization after my sentence. I have been wanting to see a KSU forum on the main page for a while also. Post something in Forum issues, and Roger usually adds it. That is what taxguy did with Cincinnati and they added it, you know what, I will do it, just post that you also want it. Fight on for KSU!
