I know this is probably a really stupid question.

So, right now I'm in the process of trying to set up college visits. There's one thing that's always confused me a little. Are you supposed to do an admissions interview on that first visit when you tour the campus or do you come back later for it? I was always under the impression that you're supposed to do admission interviews after you submit an application. Like I said, this is a really stupid question, but I'd really appreciate an answer. :)

My s did all his interviews when we were visiting. It would have been prohibitive to go back to all the schools. Most ppl do them when they are visiting. It is not a stupid question at all. Good luck! =)

Some schools require an interview. Others recommend one. Others have them be totally optional. Go to the admissions section of the school website and make sure you understand what applies. If the interview is required, then it really might be wise to do it while you are visiting – unless you happen to live very close by.
Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply! I have another quick question. When are you supposed to do them within the course of the visit? I know you’re supposed to dress nice for interviews, but dressy clothes would probably be uncomfortable to walk around in.

A lot of colleges these days expect you to look nice, but in a comfortable sort of way. Our s did his interviews in a pair of Khakis and a button down shirt(with sweater at one school) when it was cold. Depends on the school. Where are you applying and or visiting???

Well, I live in Illinois and I’ve been looking at Univ. of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, Univ. of Illinois-Chicago, Knox College, and Beloit College. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and the furthest one in about three hours away. All of them are in-state except for Beloit (Wisconsin), but it’s only about two hours away.

Colleges do know that when you are visiting that you will also be touring around. I would dress nicely, but you do not need to wear a suit. You can look nice but also be comfortable. If you are really worried, than you can wear your interview outfit and take a change of clothes and go into the campus center and change in a bathroom. No one will care. Most the kids we saw interviewing had a pair of nice slacks on with a nice shirt and or sweater. No holes in your jeans or t-shirts…

My s had one interview and they messed up his interview time and took him one hour early and we had just pulled into campus and he was still in his jeans. The interview went great and they could have cared less. That was at Whitman College. Luckily he had a decent polo type shirt on instead of one of his bummy t-shirts.

I would wear something that you would wear to a nice lunch if your boss was taking you out to eat. You want to look mature, but not overly stuffy. Be yourself.

Ok, thanks for all the advice. :)
