I know this is shallow but...

Where do USC girls shop for clothes ? Are there any places close to campus? Or do they have to get in in a car and go to a mall or downtown?

A couple ideas... (need a car)
- Downtown Fashion District is lots of fun and you can get some good deals. (S just bought a suit at a really good price.)
- Melrose between San Vicente and La Brea. There are some real hip stores and also great second-hand stores. This is a favorite place of my D's.

the grove, century city, santa monica...third street i think. you need a car to get to these places as well.

Old Town Pasadena and the brand new Americana upscale mall in Glendale

Yeah if you want to goto the beverley center, the grove, santa monica or glendale you need a car or need to ride the bus... to get to santa monica you need to take like 2 buses and for beverley center I think you only need to take one. But public transportation sucks around here so just be aware! Santa Monica Third street Promenade is my favorite place to shop though, so :D

For quick clothes shopping you can shop downstairs at the bookstore (they moved some store from the UV to there) and they have some good stuff (they also sell perfumes and make up as well) like true religion jeans etc... you can also visit elegance at UV. Its not that amazing but at least its close and cheap.

I went to the grove and the Beverley center during my expore usc visit.
I was very disappointed with the limited choice of stores there, not interesting at all. Both places were very small.

If you have a car you can drive to Del Amo Fashion Center, one of the biggest malls in the United States.

Where is the Grove?

Thanks for the wonderful information. My daughter loves shopping (nothing fancy, just jeans, blouses, shoes, etc); and she will not have a car...at least not freshman year.
We will make sure she brings plenty of clothes, and once she makes friends with somebody with a car, then she can go with her/him .

Most colleges have flexcar. It's a cheaper option than having to pay for parking.

The Grove is more about the experience than shopping. It is attached to the Farmer's Market...an old Los Angeles institution. Lots of cheap food...La Loteria is famous. Beverly Center has H & M, and is indoor. And don't forget Beverly Hills...on sale. When Ron Herman has a sale...watch out. And so does Saks and Neimans...before you sneer and say right...know that I bought my daughter's prom dress...retail $750 for $140...at a Neiman's sale.

The Grove is in the Fairfax district. It is south of Beverly Boulevard...not the drive...north of 3rd street...it sort of "starts" at Fairfax with the Farmer's Market.

I think everyone will like Third Street Promenade. It's an active pedestrian street (about 4/5 blocks), lined with shops (all the popular ones), street activities/performing, cafes, and an indoor mall at one end. Farmers market on Saturdays, and close to beach.

Ellebud:
that was a great bargain!
I am looking forward to MY shopping trips to Los Angeles (I already told my daughter I am coming to visit her frequently!)

Keep in mind that the closets and drawers in the dorms are nothing like at home lol. But then with the CA weather, all they need are some Tshirts, jeans, shorts, and flipflops. (Yes I know, such a wardrobe can include many variations of the above for a teenager anyway.)

Sequoia, I consider this a huge plus in USC's favor--since S won't have to spend $ on down outerwear, winter scarves, gloves, woolen everything, and boots. Nor pack all that bulky stuff. Nor find spots in the dorm room to store it. In fact, I don't know why USC doesn't put this benefit in all their brochures! ;)

Yesterday we had a tour of dorms. We were even shown the inside of closets. Honestly, they were not big but perfectly ample, especially since there's no need for bulky stuff. Students whose closets we saw didn't have a whole lot of clothes. I would think it's the norm. We saw the rooms in Arts and Humanities/ IRC Parkside. Really nice.
