i know what youre thinking......

.....hows the food? or is this already an over-exploited topic?

anyway, what are the meal plans? are they already included in the dorm fees and stuff?

also, what is the overall quality of the food?

lastly, thanks everyone!

the food is tasty so i hear.. there come the freshman 15!

Hey I am a little confused.........the brochure mentions this but not very clearly........do the housing fees (around $ 8200 ) INCLUDE the basic meal plan (Dining $ worth 1800) or not ??????

yeah cooladu, im wondering as well

Coming from my friends attending UCSD, the money is already included in your tuition/room and board, so you're wasting money by not using your Dining Dollars.

I hear that OVT (Marshall dining hall) has the best food overall. But every dining hall has something they're really good at. I know Marshall has very good sandwiches/wraps. I forgot what the other dining halls are good at though.

All my friends from UCSD (Muir, ERC, Marshall, and Warren) have an unbiased opinion saying OVT is only great because when you're starving late late late at night, their food is bomb.

As for best food overall, most of them say Bobcats from Ventanas (ERC) is probably their favorite food. I tried it when my friend, Anna, treated me to one, and I knew I would forever be walking from Muir to ERC everyday just to get one each morning.

Yeah definitely. I'm glad OVT will be right there when I want food late late at night :)

What are bobcats?

They're basically omelettes. I don't know they do, though, to make them so good :X

haha maybe they drug them? that would be pretty funny

$1,800.00 is for the whole school year (3 quarters) and UCSD priced everything by item not all you can eat for one price like at UCLA, UCB, UCI, etc. You could end up running out money before the end of your school year and having to add more money to your account if you are a big eater or don't watch your budget. On the other hand, if you have money left over at the end of the school year you could use it to purchase things (i.e. shampoo, snacks, etc.) at various campus stores.

the don't except you to eat three meals a day....... i don't get that

they think that no one wakes up early enough to eat breakfast. So its basically lunch and dinner.

true..and maybe on weekends..you might want to wander out with friends

Yeah, i read that the 1800 base plan included with your pay only comes out to around 53 dollars a week, so it definitely will not last you the whole year, and you'll end up adding more.

For anyone else out there, what is the deal with the TritonPlus card/plan? Is it just basically a debit card account that can be used at various locations on campus/around the campus. Thats what the website made it seem like.

TitonPlus is just like debit only it needs no pin -- the money can be put on it or withdrawn at any time -- some eating places (and bookstore of course) do not accept meal plan dollars but they do accept triton+ so it comes very handy -- just make sure you don't lose your student ID because anyone else can use up that money since it needs no ID or pin

if you run out of dinning dollars, they can be added with 10-20% bonus I believe in increments of like $250 -- i just added some at the beginning of this year, being lured into it by the bonus plus the fact that I work near plaza cafe around lunch hours -- they expire of course as soon as the academic year ends (mid-June)

to answer some previous questions:
food is good - lots of choice but it is not the best out there
freshmen 15 is real but most people get over after their first and probably stressful for most year

be happy they don't expect you to add more dinning dollars to the plan -- some students end up disliking the food and they resent being tied down to eating it by the plan

one of my suitmates go sick like once a week after she ate it -- i never had a single problem, but I think she required some strict selection of foods that she could handle, or perhaps her stomach was just not used to food prepared outside her home ... if you do not have stomach problems, or some peculiarities about what you eat, you'll probably do fine

my first year i didn't think the food was all the great but i could not pinpoint the problem -- then i realized that a lot of it is very bland -- meaning they do not use spices trying to save money, i suppose, so some dishes that you get just have salt in them .... but if that is ever a problem for you, you can always get junk food to spice things up for your taste receptors

Hahaha I was pretty unimpressed with Foodworx (Sixth's distanced dining hall)

I too am entertaining the idea of biking to ERC just to grab a bite to eat...to me it's worth it...

I guess the French influences in me tell me it's more about the experience + good food than convenience...

The chips at the Mexican place at Muir are really good - better than most I've had at any Mexican restaurant.

i love food and flavor, but i can get by on just rice, so thats good right?

as long as i walk away less hungry than when i came i am happy.
