I like UVA but....

From the people I've spoken to I think it's very under rated. I think this school needs to be more well known and like dad says that it needs to be an ivy league school.I've spoken to alot of people, and they haven't even heard of UVA until I mentioned it. But they've heard of schools in California like: USC,Pepperdine, UCLA, UC Davis, and all the other UC schools. I didn't realize until now how great and prestigious this school was which made me work harder to get off the wait list. I'am very excited (if I get in) to attend University of Virginia. If I don't get accepted, I'll be more than happy to try my luck as a transfer student. :D

It's underrated in terms of layman prestige in other parts of the country, particularly the west coast. Remember, California isn't the center of the world. To the people who matter - job recruiters, grad school admissions people, etc - it is perceived about where it should be. Some of California's finest schools, like Pomona and Harvey Mudd, are relatively unknown on the east coast.

UVA is a well-respected school to those people who matter. It is, in fact, ranked #2 public university in the nation. It is also considered the public ivy. The reason some people don't know UVA is its public status. If it is private, then it is very likely to be ranked in Top 10.

"But they've heard of schools in California like: USC,Pepperdine, UCLA, UC Davis, and all the other UC schools."

UVa is more well known than all those schools in East Coast.

C'mon, I'd say East Coast is more important.......you've got Washington DC, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia...etc.

UVA is much more well-known on the East Coast. Many mention it in the same breath as schoos like Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Emory, and many other tops schools--which is exactly where it should be mentioned. Although it may be relatively unknown on the West Coast, anybody who is well-educated on universities, such as anybody looking to hire you or whatnot, will know what an amazing institution it is.

NerdyUSCgurl, are you from California? I am too. :) We're a rare breed out here!

Sometimes, I wish I was from California with all this competition into getting into a great school. No, I'm from Las Vegas. The reason why I have the name NerdyUSCgurl is because my dream school was to go to USC until I got rejected. Then I started looking at UVa a little bit more, and I started to like what they had to offer to a student. I feel that if I go to UVa I'll meet more intelligent and ambitious students like me. I'll also be able to learn more and have a great education. I didn't just come to college just to party. I came to college just to have a great education too. I get the vibe that alot of students at UVa have a great value for their education or otherwise they wouldn't be enrolling the top students from each high school across America.Today was an overwhelming day for me because I actually spoke to the admissions office of UVa twice and sent in additional information to help me with my acceptance to this university.

To be honest, I was suprised that you did not think U.Va. was a prestigious university. Location must be considered... You live in Las Vegas, and therefore have much closer ties to California schools. Pomonoa, USC, Pepperdine, UCLA, while great schools... aren't international Universities. University of Virginia is the only American university part of Universitas 21 which is an initiative to unite prestigious Universities for exchange programs and collaborative research opportunties.

In addition, the only thing that holds the University back is ist status as a Public Institution, which recently the University has received 'Charter' status, which makes it a Privately funded University, with allegience to the state, ergo, vast opportuniteis for greater funding in the future. We're predicted to be in the top 15 of all universities in 10 years.

Lastly, it is the atmosphere at the University that makes it comparable to, if not better than many IVY league institutions. I came to U.Va. not ecause of a great sports program, or hot girls, but for something that I knew would get me a job, and that was a love an dappreciation for academics as well as a focus on pursuing things outside of the classroom through clubs and organizations.... NEVER a dull moment at the University, whether studying, serving the community, or hanging with friends.

Anyotherday, you are truly one of the reasons why I want to go to UVa to meet ambitious and intelligent people like you. It's about time I've heard someone say they want to go to a college just to get a great job and make something great of themselves.
