There’s no easy answer to differentiating. Look at it this way: These schools will have hundreds, maybe even a couple of thousand, applications from Asian students from CA who have very similar stats to yours. They can only take a few, lets say 8. Think about what you need to tell them about yorself to make you one of the 8 they will select.

pretty good for brown, i’m not sure about yale (mid reachh)

@redroses I’m sure thats extremely exaggerated, but I get your point. Thanks for the help!

Your ACT is fine and your grades are very good.

The SAT IIs are low for the really top schools (an 800 in math 2 is 89 percentile and the Lit is obviously low.) Also, your AP exams are low – 3s and 4s will be a problem for the top Ivys.

Basically, I think Yale, Stanford, MIT, and CalTech are mid to high reaches. Brown and Duke are propably mid reaches, and that you have a good shot at all the UC schools.

You have an EXCELLENT chance by EDing at Brown. I don’t see why everyone says your SAT I score is bad - it isn’t! It’s actually pretty good for Brown. AND your SAT IIs are good (except for that lit, but you’re retaking it anyways). And yoiur ACT score is AMAZING! You should stick to sending your ACT score instead of your SAT score. But, of course, being asian WILL damage your chances, but just slightly And your ECs are great. You seem really focused (and passionate) about music, which is a HUGE plus. Maybe it could be an essay topic… :)

I would agree with JoshByron about applying ED to Brown. Your chances will be better if you apply there ED.

I think you’d have an amazing shot if you did Brown ED. Make sure you’re committed going to the school, though.

A weakness in your application is your AP scores. 3-4 doesn’t nearly look as good as a 5. Sorry for being a bit too picky, but Yale and Brown are picky as well.

Thanks guys!

Yeah i guess grades may be a little inflated at my school. Mean SAT scores hover around 1500/2400.

And as for music, well its more of a hobby. All the asians are crazy about music, so I’m planning on not really emphasizing on music that much.

You have a really good chance at Brown ED. Yale’s gonna be a lot tougher, but you should probably retake the Lit subject test if you’re gonna apply.

(Thanks for the chance btw.)
