I love Stony Brook

The only thing that bothers me is the dorming situation and how freshman are stuck in cramped dorms with roomates they might not even like. Are there apartments nearby that i could possibly rent?

stony brook sucks!...dont bother going there...you will be miserable like everyone else

There really aren't apartments but there are shared student houses. I don't think freshman live there though. And without a car it would be hard to get to school, unless you are planning on having a car.

Most schools have similar dorming situations.

bran10: Are you a Stony Brook student? I have known, and now know, many students happy with Stony Brook.

i attended stony brook last semester..most people i spoke with agreed with me..

Here we go again. Yes, bran, everyone's miserable here, that's why housing is so full that we're building more, and that's why our applications keep going up, and that's why a student and her mom who were in my office yesterday cried because she was so happy to be admitted.

Keep feeding the stereotype, and enjoy the rest of your college career, wherever it may be. Sadly, you will not be missed.

As to the OP's question, we do have an off-campus housing office. Their Web site is here: OCH: Welcome to Off Campus Housing They have a searchable database of apartments, both in complexes and in houses. Housing is tough in this area; it can be cheaper to live off-campus, but it can also be more expensive. It really depends on your situation.

Chris

Chris said it well and I'll say it again. My freshman daughter is more than happy with SB. Yes, she was tripled, but will be doubled this semester. It was not a big deal and they offered her detripling early on in the first semester, but she denied it. She joined a sorority, goes to various clubs that meet her interest, met tons of nice, smart and interesting students..and we're paying top dollar (out of state). So, those of you considering it, don't just listen to the naysayers..if you want to go, go with a positive attitude. It's a good rule for life...

how much is the train ticket form nyc to the station at stony?

"how much is the train ticket form nyc to the station at stony?"

And from NYC to Albany? haha I tried to find prices for these, but the sites are very confusing from what I saw.

Penn Station to stonybrook fares

to Albany, I believe you would have to take Amtrak think it is about 40'ish but not sure.

Ohhh okay thanks:)

Bran, where do you plan on going now?

I'm attending Geneseo for this semester

how do you like geneseo? I applied there too...

im a freshman spring admit through the deferred admission program...Geneseo was my first choice so i applied early decision...i start january 22nd

why geneseo and not binghamton?

there's just something special about the geneseo atmosphere...i loved the fact that its a really small town...i just felt I belonged on campus when i was on the tour..i wanted a medium sized school thats dedicated to the undergraduate education....many people from my high school are attending binghamton...i felt like going to binghamton would just be high school all over again

I think the Geneseo/Binghamton decision is a very personal one. I mean for me, I want a bigger school. While the small school idea would be good, I want to meet as many people as possible, with a large diversity. And when I visited Binghamton, I felt like I belonged there more.

As a Geneseo alumnus, I can tell you that Geneseo and Stony Brook are about as different as you can get within the same system, from size to location to majors to perceived academic strengths. That said, I loved Geneseo; I go back there every chance I get.

I can't speak much to Binghamton vs Geneseo, as I don't have a lot of direct experience with Binghamton.

Chris

“how much is the train ticket form nyc to the station at stony?”

Off-peak, the fare is generally $10.75, and peak fares are $15 now!!! (ONE-WAY)

Can you believe it!? The MTA has begun to dig deeper into the pockets of college students! As of two weeks ago, the peak fare increased from $13.25 to $15 one-way from Penn Station(NYC) to Stony Brook(or vice-versa).

Its ridiculous.

Tip: Save money by purchasing round-trip tickets.

“Here we go again. Yes, bran, everyone’s miserable here, that’s why housing is so full that we’re building more, and that’s why our applications keep going up, and that’s why a student and her mom who were in my office yesterday cried because she was so happy to be admitted.” -Chris

Not to make enemies at Stony Brook or anything (since I plan on either going there or Binghamton), but the dorms are full and new ones are being built because
A) Cheap education
B) Stony Brook no longer has the money to keep their Southampton campus running and are transferring all its students to the main campus

I’ve heard so many bad things about Stony Brook, and statistically it’s not a great school (IMO), but I just don’t see how a school that offers so many majors, has so many clubs, and has such a great location could be bad. Can anyone explain this to me?
