I love the curriculum, but

I love what Brown stands for, but I come from a rural enviroment, and while I recognize the upside of an urban atmosphere, I’m worried that I just wouldn’t be happy there. Are there any wooded areas for walking/ running? Do any other rural-based students have any input to offer?

Really, Brown is pretty nice for a rural kid. I know. My town has about 1000 people in it, and I am perfectly happy at Brown. Albeit, I spend a lot more time on the Main Green by a tree than most, and into colder weather, but it makes me happy. I mean, it really just comes down to you wanting to make it work. There are enough trees, and the BOC (Brown Outing Club) makes very regular trips out of the area to go climbing or what have you. The other thing is that Brown is not really in a steretypically "urban" environment, like say Columbia in NYC or Yale in New Haven. We are on top of a hill, and are surrounded by nice old homes and treed (is that even a word?) streets. The bay is right down the street, and it really doesn't feel like you're in more than a large-ish town until you walk down the hill into Downtown Providence, which is open and has a bunch of green space and trees too. I think that it's a perfect mix of having the resources of a city, and at the same time being able to walk around on lawns and trees and get sun on your face.

I might be getting to sappy now, but I hope you get my point. The layout of Providence is amazing for us rural kids, and Brown is even up on the hill away from that. And if you still feel like you're stuck in a city, the RIPTA bus system will take you to some state parks and beaches and things like that for $1.50.

Did that help at all?

haha yes, definitely. I totally get what you mean about the trees...it's all about the trees.
