my gpa sucks and I can't do anything about it now. :(... can only try to get excellent grades first semester/term senior year! can anyone give me my chances? =] average WEIGHTED gpa at my school accepted is a 4.0, btw - but we've had low as 3.8 accepted.

GPA: 3.7W [top 20-25%] -- hardest courseload possible, 5 APs whereas most take 2-3.
SAT: 2200 [720v 760m 720w] -- how will bumping this up to a 2300+ help me? i really didn't study first time around...
ACT: taking in the fall perhaps.

SAT IIs:
- chemistry 730
- math iic 760
taking lit & bio in november. these scores were after retakes from HORRIBLE scores, lol. i studied a lot.

ECs (probably strongest of my application along w/ good SAT scores):
- ART PORTFOLIO. this is my passion :) i'm loving wesleyan's beautiful art studios and department, which is what attracted me there in the first place. i plan to send a portfolio fo all my works, several of which have won interstate awards, as well as winning yearly prizes from the school. i've also been constantly in many art shows/chosen for publication, works online, etc. i can get at least THREE amazing recs, as all my art teachers love me
- COMMUNITY SERVICE. i probably do waaay more then the average applicant, lol. i have 500+ hours of work, ranging from tutoring needy kids without a good schooling system to volunteering at a local hospital, shadowing doctors, whatnot. i especially love working with children: one of the reasons i want to be a pediatrician! CC clubs i've been in are PALS (tutoring very bright kids who don't have the teachers to help them - director), MOST (charity walks and founds), SLC (school relating funding), Red Cross Club (raising funds for victims, making stuff for war veterans), etc.
- LITERARY MAG INTERNSHIP. does this count as community service? i did this for about two years, ran an entire magazine for middle school kids with my friend (professionally though, we had a supervisor). i did all the design work and layouting (more art related stuff to add to my art resume)
- i have other little clubs, a few sports and music related things, academic teams and such, but i feel as those are my most important :] should i even bother with the other details?

how does my chance stand at wesleyan (i know it isn't above 50% though...) and is there anything else even REMOTELY i can do to help my chances? i've visited the school, taken the tour & info session... also, i live in massachusetts, and i'm an asian female.

Are you applying early decision? That can help a lot, so that the school knows you're in love with them. I also had not great grades (about a 3.9 W), and your grades are probably what are going to hurt you the most. Make sure you highly some of those extracurriculars on your application instead of just letting them hide in the little list room they give you on the Common App. Also, compared to a lot of top schools, Wes doesn't have an overabundance of Asian students so that won't hurt you and will probably actually help. A 2200 SAT is quite good - of course a 2300 would be better, but it definitely puts you in a good range. Like I said, your grades are the biggest problem, but the fact that you're taking such a challenging courseload shows that you're motivated to learn, at least.

By the time most people post these chances threads, there's not THAT much that can be done. IF there's a teacher who knows you really well, or any non-family adult really, get a recommendation from them - even if it's not the class you got the best grades in. In fact, I got a recommendation from a teacher I loved and used to have good discussions with after school, but who I never got better than a B with, and it was outstanding and helped explain and counteract some of my bad grades and probably helped a lot.

Also, writing an outstanding essay is easier said than done, but make sure it allows your personality to shine through. Don't try to make it too polished... I think the best essays often tend to be about some particular moment that stands out in your mind that reflects who you are, or etc. Also, if you want to be a pediatrician... mention that you're interested in the sciences. Wesleyan loves science majors, particularly female science majors, since it's marketing itself as a liberal arts school with some of the best sciences in the country. So when it asks for your major.. just... mention that :P

fortunately for you, wesleyan is one of those schools that dont look solely at numbers. your ECs definitely make you attractive to wesleyan (and i can tell why you are love wes). write killer essays, get great recs, apply early, and you will have a nice shot!

My philosophy is that if you love any school to death you should apply, no matter what the odds of acceptance. Just so you can say you tried.

So write killer essays, maybe get an admissions interview and apply early decision, young precocious, and maybe I'll see you in my sophomore year. ;)

i had a 4.1 weighted GPA but i was below you in all your other scores and my ECs were not outstanding. I got waitlisted, then accepted.

I worked my butt off to get off of the waitlist and I think one of the things that really helped me was a peer recommendation--you could try slipping that in as a supplement to your application. You should also try e-mailing the art dept chair or other professors because they might put in a good word for you.

your academics are fine... it is who you are that gets you in. there are many, many applicants who are more than qualified to get in... but it is how they present themselves through their essay and chosen EC's that push them above the others. your SATs are right around the 50% percentile at wes, etc etc... just show them who you are and what you bring to the table

You should get in. I mean don't take my word for it... but Wesleyan, being a small liberal arts college takes in a lot more than academics for their admission decisions. Cornell, a much bigger school which has a similar admission rate, rejected me, but I was offered admission to Wes because I have a very strong extracurricular background and strong passions. Other stats: I got a 2140 on the SAT's (800 M, 640 V), and a 3.87 GPA.

Haha JB, same here!
I got into wes with a 2150 (760 math, 670 verbal, 720 writing), 690 bio, 720 math 2, and a horrible english lit score. My gpa was in the same area as JB's and I was one of the Rank 1's in my high school.

I was also rejected at cornell (i didn't want to go there so i was happy), and eventually at UChicago (which was originally my first choice). But i'm starting at wes in a few days, and I couldn't be more ecstatic!

I'm an asian male. And I just want to make it known, that being asian and female, especially if you're interested in the math and science deptartments, gives you a bit of a boost in admissions. So if you were to ask me your chances, I'd say they were pretty damn good as long as you did a good job on your essays.

Are you applying ED or RD?

PS- Try getting over your inferiority complex, you've done damn well thus far :-)
