i loved rhodes!

hey, i just visited Rhodes, and i loved it - the campus, the academics, the professors, and the students all seemed great. A bit more southern than I think I would be comfortable with initially (I'm from the NE), and more religious (in a Christian sense) than I expected, but the students seemed very open-minded and friendly, and I'm ready for something different from what I've been used to in high school. I was also a little worried about the area - my grandfather worked in Memphis and told me that it wasn't much of a city - but I felt absolutely safe on campus. There's even a little guardhouse when you drive in, lol. Also, I didn't have a chance to see the surrounding area (Midtown etc.) but my dad stayed at the Peabody Hotel and said that he saw lots of cute little areas. It also seemed like students really liked the city and commonly took advantage of what it has to offer.

I was also really impressed by Rhodes' great record with internships, grad school placement, and community service. The English and French departments seemed excellent, and the British Studies at Oxford program sounds fantastic.

The only thing that was a bit disappointing was their theatre and fine arts resources - they just have one black box theatre, which was disappointing in comparison to schools with beautiful and extensive drama facilities - Kenyon and Middlebury, in particular. But the head of the drama department was extraordinarily dynamic, and I heard they just got a major fine arts grant, so that will be improving. Also, they did say they sometimes co-sponsor drama programs with the University of Memphis.

Basically, though, I loved Rhodes - and my excellent fin aid and scholarship money there (the best that I received) certainly doesn't hurt either.

I'm tentative to post this (even though i have to make my decision in like 5 days, lol), but i think there's a very strong chance that i'll be joining the class of 2009 in the fall. :)

anyone else?

Congrats, Hyacinthgirl, on your acceptance and scholarships to Rhodes! My S is finishing up his first year there, and he's enjoyed it. He's been involved in both student government and club sports, both of which might have been harder to get into at a larger school.

One of the reasons he chose Rhodes is the city of Memphis. Since many colleges are either in very small towns or very large and older urban areas, we felt Memphis was a good compromise - large enough to present opportunities off-campus, but small enough for a college student to navigate. The area within 5 miles of the campus contains major shopping and restaurants, and the newest growth area, Germantown, is only 15 minutes away via expressway.

theHyacinthgirl, I am so happy for you. It sounds like Rhodes might just be the place for you. So glad to hear you enjoyed it. Rhodes is currently at the top of D's list and my fingers are crossed that it will eventually be her final choice. She's got plenty of time, though, as she is just a junior. Good luck with your decision. I look forward to hearing your final decision! :)
