I’m an NYU student – ask away! Part III

I grew up in southern california. I was spoiled with socal weather and anything below 60 degrees is "cold" to me. I know I can handle the weather, but even so, a little mental preparation as to the degree of coldness would be nice. =) thanks!

futurenyustudent: Stern does have MAP requirements. I don't know what they are, but maybe you can look them up online on Stern's website.

tenaciousteeh:

I'm actually in San Jose right now. :D So I can make some comparisons for you. Summer's generally 70-100 deg. F with little humidity, right? Well... you might be in for a bit of a shock in NYC.

First off, winters can get absolutely frigid. This last winter was record-breaking - we had so much snow, and temperatures were quite low. You can definitely expect the temperature to drop below freezing during the winter. It can get cold enough that on a 15-minute walk from Union Square to class, my muscles in my chin get so numb and stiff that moving my lower lip to talk or whatever can be a little... interesting. :)

Fall and spring are generally not a problem. The humidity can get icky if the temperature rises, but usually it'll rain so the humidity will go back down. You'll want an umbrella and good water-resistant shoes because some of the puddles get big and deep.

If you plan to stay for summer, that may not be fun at all. The temperature is much like southern Cali's, but the humidity is 3-4 times higher. For example, you'll get 90 degree days with 90% humidity. Not fun, I tell you.

I hope I didn't scare you too much. :D It's just... very different from California. If you have more questions, just ask.

haha...thanks, that helps!

Do I have a chance at stern?

ACT: 27 (11 essay)
GPA: 4.13 W
RANK: 6%
IB classes

yes........

lol you shouldnt' ask her about your chances at schools....

so do i have a chance at stern (HAHA)

SAT: 2220
SAT II: Math I/II: 750/740 U.S. HIST: 740
GPA : 4.0
Taken all the requirements to transfer!!!! Whatcha say?

i dont think this is meant for chances, but i think you look good too. not that im an admissions dude or anything, so it doesnt matter what i think.

lol i know i'm messing with you...but sorry i called you her...your name is rachel212 so i figured you were a girl.

haha, i get it now

{im slow}

lmao thank you i didn't want you to think i'm a pompous a**. (which i am)

excel, rachel212, brand_182:

I generally try to avoid threads about chances because I flat-out don't really know. :) I don't want people to think I can tell them if they can make it in.

That being said, I'll give my patented piece of advice to all would-be NYU students: higher test scores NEVER hurt. I would guess that to have a real chance at NYU, you'll need at least a 600+ on any given section of the SAT I or SAT II, challenging coursework, and devotion to some extracurricular activities. Bear in mind that this is only my guess.

Good luck to you guys. If you have any more questions, ask. :D

If i wanted to major in Psych in CAS could i also take on a comajor at Stern like for example International Business?

drea: Sorry, no. CAS students cannot major or minor outside the school unless they're in a special program of some sort. If you want to do Psych but be in Stern, you'll have to apply to Stern.

Hi shades_children. Just wondering if you were still around.

goyoungha, I'm still here. I just don't post as often now that people are asking questions that I don't know the answers to, like squirrelly housing rules and finance questions. :D If you have a question, though, I'll do my best. :)

Wonderful! What do you think of 6 day a week classes? :)

goyoungha, I'll be honest. My first reaction was, "Urgh."

Now that I think about it, it might not be so bad. It depends on how you've got your schedule set up. If you're talking 3-4 classes a day for six days, then you're totally crazy. If you mean 3-4 classes a day for three days and then one class a day for three days, then it's doable.

Honestly, aside from the workload issues, I'd be annoyed with having to go to campus 6 days a week. Five days a week with only a Friday monring recitation was annoying enough - I can't imagine six days a week.

hi shades_children,

is it overkill to bring a safe to keep your valuables in? do a lot of nyu students do this? thanks

starry_heights:

What kind of safe, and what kind of valuables? Where are you going to be living?

My initial reaction was that it'd be total overkill, but if you don't trust your roommates to lock the door and not leave their keys lying around, a little bit of paranoia isn't bad. However, I'd caution you against bringing anything too expensive or exotic. If you could give me more details, then I think I'd have a better sense of your problem.

Hi, I'll be starting NYU fall of 2007 and have a couple questions.

Is there a cap on the number of majors and or minors you can have? Or is it basically how ever many classes you manage to take?

Also, have you had any experiences with finding internships through NYU? Were they helpful, or was it a go it alone experience?

Lastly, I'm also interested in studying abroad in London probably during my junior year? How was that experience - both there, and getting there? Also I doubt you can answer this but do you have any idea if there was a kosher food plan there? Don't worry about that last one, I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks!
