I made a resume today!!

**Quick Info: Hey guys, I'm a junior and I want to get into an ivy and basically succeed in life. But hey, everyone does. The problem is, I'm not the BEST.. I do so much random stuff.. but I don't have perfect sat scores.. (I haven't taken it yet, but my practice tests are always around 2100).. I am not valedictorian (more like 20/304), and I don't know what college/major I'm going to have. Right now, the Wharton School at Penn looks really good right now, but I'm not going to get in.. =P My main interests: Violin, Debate, Business..
Ok ok, comment!

Hey guys.. sorry that's soo long.. yeesh

Dude trim all that stuff down! If an EC isnt special, take it off!

Haha.. duuuude
I just copied and pasted from my personal computer..
I gotta beef it up.. =P
I'm applying to gov. school (Global Entrepreneurship) so I just started typing today..

If you're sending resume to colleges, leave off the "honors placement" and AP stuff... they'll see that on the transcript.

Leave out the thirteenth place thing under FBLA competition... while it may have been impressive at the actual competition, the two first place awards overshadow it (also... maybe you could group those 2 awards in one bullet to make things shorter). It also looks like the "Most Preppy" award isn't as important... and you say you were "Invited to National Youth Leadership Conference" but if you didn't actually go, I'd leave that off too.

For the school activities, you can leave out a ton of small or obscure events. Like under orchestra, "Perform in community concerts in Winter and Spring", instead you could leave that out and just write the number of hours you spend in orchestra in general. Keep only the most important events rather than listing them all (since there are obviously a lot) and don't put in extra details that aren't as necessary.

Instead of listing each play you have been involved with with drama guild by name, just list how many there have been and the number of approximate hours.

I would also leave out things like "Delegate at Yale Model United Nations (9)" because there are other similar events and you only did this in 9th. Keep things you did later in high school, or ones from 9th that are very important, or things you started in 9th and continued. Things like "Interact Club (9)" don't add much so they are better off not being there.

For JSA, leave out "Acquired permission from Student Council, Club Director, and found a Teacher Advisor and officers". Just tell them you were in it, no need to tell them how you founded it.

"·Relay for Life (10, 11)
- am member (10, 11)" is a bit awkward, change it to something like "Relay For Life (Member, 10,11). On a side note, I think lots of people do relay for life and unless you were majorly involved in setting it up or such it is not something that should be mentioned on a resume at all.

"Compete in a business simulation, examine the disciplines of accounting, marketing, finance and management, and learn the core concepts of business including leadership, professional image, etiquette, team building, and strategy.
- In addition, learned about the resources essential to business such as technology, the stock market and The Wall Street Journal."
No need to list all these things... they'll get the same message if you say "Competed in simulation involving aspects, resources and core concepts of business."

"·Peer Tutoring – (10, 11)
- Tutor in Spanish and Math
- Tutor 2 hours a week" Change these 3 lines to something more like: "Peer Tutoring in Spanish/Math - (10, 11, 2 hours/week)"

Whew... well hope that helps.

Thanks so much!!!
But just a quick question.. If I were applying to gov school, especially Global Entrepreneurship, wouldn't I really want to emphasize the Camp Business aspect? Like all of the business classes I took.. shouldn't I elaborate?
But overall, you are extremely helpful..
and you get major props for reading all of that!

LOL, you don't want to put "Most Peppy" on your resume...it's kind of unprofessional...

Omit that.

Hehehe..
yeah, sorry it's such a messy resume. I pretty much dragged out every little detail..

And Coquettish.. I know "most peppy" doesn't sound professional.. but I definitely don't have enough awards and I need something from Model UN.. even though it was just a committee award for fun..
i dont' know.. do you all agree that I should take it off?

I don't know...I don't really have very many specific awards either...just lots of honors societies. I do think it's superfluous information, however...

I don't think you should omit Interact Club...I thought resumes were supposed to list everything one is involved in.

Not everything... only the most important ones. And Interact doesn't seem to be one of venus's more important activities. The point of a resume is to make you seem appealing, not to make the reader fall asleep. That's accomplished by selecting only what will make you seem like a better candidate.

As for awards, it's better to list a few good awards rather than a lot that don't mean as much. Same with everything else.

Don't worry so much about "beefing up" your resume! It could work against you, i.e. it seems that you're adding negligible items because you have no major meaningful activities.

Instead, focus on a few that a) you have spent a lot of time on or b) you have won a significant award in. If you don't want to leave something out, but it IS important to you (like that PEER TUTORING thing), just group it together with something else (like under your Service Club or whatnot).

And to contradict Coquettish, I think you should leave off "Interact Club" because you didn't even list anything under it. Seeing as how you listed every LITTLE thing you did in all the other clubs, but have nothing in this, it's obviously not important at all. And no, don't "list everything one is involved in".

Overall, you might feel pained to raze off the length of your resume, but it will be better. You might have to leave off many activities, but don't cry over "not getting credit for it". I do admit - I did not read every word of your resume. It's not because of the length of it - if it were long and meaningful, I would pore over it - but rather how (I'm sorry) insignificant many lines are. But it's okay. It's still early for you.

Okay, I'll take your advice.
I'm definitely taking Interact Club off and I'll make things more concise. But do you think I should take off all the places that I've performed at for Orchestra/Hrs Strings?? I think that's significant, but now it seems wordy.. but dude, I played with the Grateful Dead keyboardists! haha, that was a life altering experience!
But thank you so much for the advice! keep it coming!
