My essay is about my love for satire and how it has shaped who I am. My hook is from some satire I had to write for AP Language and Composition this past year. “A common problem among high school students is that they do not get enough sleep and often find themselves inattentive and sleeping during class. A solution to this problem is that students should do cocaine before they go to school.” Is this appropriate for an essay?
No
why? @educateddarcy Do you think someone might find it offensive?
Perhaps we would need more context (is that supposed to be funny or something?) but it just sounds completely irrelevant to me. You’re trying to get into college here.
That’s pretty crappy satire… if I read that as the start of an essay, I would think you’re trying way too hard to be shocking and edgy.
Satire is tricky in and of itself. Someone always gets offended because they don’t necessarily understand what you’re trying to say. I’d be careful using it in your essay.
Ill will use a different hook then
I’m usually more verbose. I thought by using one word there would be no room for interpretation.
All ready thought of a new hook and its a 100 times better than my old one and it doesn’t involve anything controversial
No, it’s not working.
@DrGoogle I all ready said i have thought of a new idea for a hook
Ok, but what hook are you talking about?
@DrGoogle my new hook has not been mentioned yet and it is completely different then the one i mentioned in the first post of the thread
