I messed up freshman year

I'm just finishing up freshman year and I have a few Cs on my report card, I'm usually an all A student, but this year has been really hard, my school is very competitive and never seems to fail at keeping me up all night with homework. I take all Pre-AP classes and plan on taking AP in the future, I'm in choir and I play lacrosse and I'm thinking about playing feild hockey as well next year. I really want to go to UC Berkeley or an Ivy leaugue school, is there still a chance? Thanks.

Don’t worry about freshman grades. In fact, this could actually be a good thing for your academic record. First amd foremost, most high schools don’t calculate your freshman grades into your HS GPA so colleges won’t see them. If your high school does count in your freshman year, provided you improve your grades in your sophomore year, colleges will see that you are able to fix your mistakes and will view this as a positive trait.

For the record, though, having straight As all the way through is still better than having an upward trend. Many colleges consider freshman grades (because they consider all the grades on the transcript), and the ones that don’t usually consider class rank anyway (which takes freshman grades into account).

More importantly, if you’re getting “a few Cs” freshman year, how are you going to do better later?

Figure out how you’re going to do better next year! I wouldn’t recommend adding field hockey if you’re already overwhelmed with what you’re doing now. Identify the problems, work harder, and do better. Your grades freshman year are not as important as your grades for the rest of high school.
