I might be short 3 units. I think I'm gonna cry.

So a class I was counting on taking as part of my spring 2014 semester is full. This sucks, because I applied to 4 UCs this past November. I am an IGETC certified student, and I'm confident in my application; I should get in to at least one school. I put PL or IP for all the classes I'm taking this semester but I basically got screwed because one was full. I just emailed my professor begging him for an add code but the deadline to add drop is tomorrow.

I'm certain my applications were stellar, and I'm smart, motivated, creative, etc. My applications reflect this and my GPA is really good. I've been through a lot of medical problems too, and I talk about this in my personal statement(s).

So, is there anyway to take a class in the summer (yes, I know that you need 60 by the end of your spring sem.)? Is it possible petition to take a class in the summer or concurrently while at a UC? I'm all set except for three little stupid units. I don't want to have to take another year @ CCC and redo the applications, repay the application fee, just for one stupid class.

There has to be some flexibility on the 60 unit limit, and if not, well that is pretty ridiculous.

AFAIK, the 60 units is a hardline requirement that has to be completed by the end of the spring before you transfer. Do you have any IB or AP credits?

Does your school offer credit by examination? If it does, that would be a good way to get those last few units.

What class is it? There are 3 CCs on the quarter system, and the spring quarter doesn’t start for a while. I go to Foothill College, which is one of these 3 CCs. It offers many online classes (I have taken most of my classes online). Perhaps the course you need is offered online at one of these colleges, If it’s a common class, it’s likely offered online at Foothill.

I’m not sure how your CC is structured but at my CC there are typically “late start” courses that are offered at the middle of the semester, yeah the work load may feel like more but its the same amount just with less time, so that might be a good option for you if its available.

Where I go to school they also offer things like Coop or lab courses that you can get units for and the more units you take the more hours you have to work.

Just a couple of thoughts.
Hope everything works out, good luck!

As mentioned above, you could probably find a late start online course, or manage to enroll in an online course at a quarter-based CC. At my previous CC, Coastline College, there are some online courses that don’t start until March. Bear in mind that these are eight week courses. I (obviously) don’t know what classes you have already taken, but I just did a quick search of open online late start courses at Coastline. One that stands out to me is PHIL120 (Ethics, 3 units, UC-transferable). That class should not give you any trouble, even at an accelerated pace. There are still options available to you! I wish you luck in finding a suitable course.

Well thank goodness, my prof was nice enough gave me an add code; so I should now in fact make the 60 by the end of the semester  My back up plan was actually to enroll in an accelerated 8 week course halfway through the semester (as opposed to the regular 16 week), as a couple people mentioned on here. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

Things are looking up again guys (even though I nearly had a stroke earlier when my prof said the class was full).

Thanks again!

You know that useless course in the schedule that transfers to UCs - take it. Whether it is health or some art class…many colleges (at least ones i am at) have late start courses (online too). I recommend applying to another community college for online courses or something for late-start for this semester.

Just one comment here about attitude. You might want to rethink it. You knew about this requirement for, oh, 2 years. If you think the UCs are going to be flexible once you are enrolled about requirements for graduating or completing your major or minimum progress or what-have-you because you don’t like the rules then you are going to be in for an uncomfortable awakening.

BTW I am glad your prof helped you out!
