I might have surgery this summer,

preventing me from doing anything meaningful.

How do I explain this to colleges? I know it is going to hurt me, but I want to convey it in a way that will prevent it from completely killing my chances.

Thanks for any input.

Sounds like major stuff. Just be honest with them, and tell them your story. They'll definitely understand. Plus, it's always good when you come back from surgery and perform highly in school. That should show them that you're a serious student, and you can get right on track.

I'm in the same boat. I have surgery and this will probably prevent me from entering Fall 08 (If they accept me that is) so a letter explaining the situation will do.

Incompl - are you a transfer applicant? Are you currently in college or hs? How have your other summers been spent? How much recovery time will the surgery involve; is it smack in the middle of the summer so you can't get a paying job? If so, can you do anything before that (volunteer type?)

All in all, I wouldn't worry about it. Your overall pattern of how you have used your summers is more important than any one particular summer.

I'm currently a freshman.
Last year I didn't do anything as I just wanted to take a break and decided to travel. I was involved in a business program the year before though.

I'm not sure how long it will take to recover as it is still in the early planning stages. But if I can get a job, I will definitely do that (I have never held a job :( )

This sucks because I'm only applying to 4 schools, and they all have <10% acceptance rates.

Thanks for your input!
